Key Responsibilities The Lead Hand is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day maintenance activities of the shop. The Lead Hand must achieve set standards of maintenance within budgeted costs and in accordance with company policy and procedure. The position is directly accountable to the Operations Manager for the effective utilization of shop facilities, equipment/manpower, and the maintenance, efficiency, and safety of buses serviced.

  • Assists in all aspects of maintenance
  • Train new employees in safe and productive operating procedures
  • Perform administrative work, as required
  • Display professional leadership with fellow employees in support of company goals and values
  • Maintain a positive and professional relationship with co-workers, drivers, and operational staff
  • Work in accordance with Company Policies/Procedures and Government Regulations
  • Assumes accountability for each employee’s quality of work and productivity
  • Works with Operations Manager to identify corrective action(s)
  • Stay aware of key cost areas such as warranties and supplies
  • Schedules sequence of maintenance services and semi-annual inspections on buses to optimize balances between operating requirements, downtime of revenue equipment and overall shop productivity
  • Ensure compliance with other maintenance standards and policies including: tire condition, winter works, yard, building and mechanical equipment condition
  • Record and reports accident damage to equipment and any/all personal injuries
  • Maintain high level of awareness amongst personnel of potential task related hazards
  • Check that work orders are accurate and appropriate for work performed; clarify work with dispatch as required
  • Continuously monitor effectiveness of bus cleaning & ensures standards are followed and met
  • Ensure that all regulatory requirements are met in the handling of hazardous materials
  • Ensures that shop and outside areas are neat and free of debris

The Lead Hand works an 8 hour day shift Monday through Friday, with overtime as required.

Requirements

  • Automotive Journeyperson Ticket
  • CVIP (Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program) License considered an asset
  • Southland will supply training for qualifications that are required or preferred, such as CVIP and maintenance procedures. We will also assist with Blue Seal Certification.
  • Own hand tools
