As a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse participating in the Clinical Extern Program, you will be an integral part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team focused on delivering seamless services and programs to our clients and customers. What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), and other regulated healthcare professionals, including assistance with activities of daily living and therapeutic interactions
  • Perform duties for which you have received appropriate training and feel confident performing, and must seek guidance whenever uncertain.
  • Perform basic clinical tasks such as vital signs, specimen collection, glucometry, and routine monitoring, in accordance with organizational policies and the extern scope of practice
  • Documents care activities and observations using approved tools, following extern responsibilities and Homewood guidelines
  • Communicates accurately and on time with supervising nurses and actively participates in team huddles, handovers, and patient safety discussions.
  • Supports unit operations by stocking supplies, preparing equipment, and keeping patient and work areas clean and organized
  • Follows all hospital policies, including privacy, confidentiality, occupational health and safety, professional conduct, scheduling requirements, mandatory training, performance check-ins, and HHC vaccination and PPE policies

What we’re looking for:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (BScN or Practical Nursing) in Ontario. (with preference given to year 3 and 4 students)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and active listener
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills and the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong physical assessment skills and demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Understanding of the healthcare system and the services available for the treatment of mental health and addiction
  • Participate in scheduling requirements, mandatory education and training, and performance check-ins as outlined by the Enhanced Extern Program

The pay for this position is $20.60 hourly, in accordance with the applicable collective agreement. Progression through the wage steps is governed by the terms of the collective agreement.
