Job Description

What is the opportunity?

  • The Enterprise Chief Controls Office (ECCO) is a first line of defense group, newly centralized across the Enterprise with a Global Mandate to embed a culture of risk ownership and operational excellence by elevating the control environment and driving consistency and quality of risk practices to minimize loss and regulatory sanction, drive cost efficiencies, and accelerate execution to enable growth.
  • The Enterprise Control Testing (ECT) team serves as RBC’s central control testing function, acting on behalf of the 1LOD (first line of defense) Control Owner, and is responsible for performing control assurance activities in accordance with RBC’s Internal Controls Testing Policy and Standards (ICMP and ICMS).
  • The Director, Data and Planning is accountable for ECT’s design, implementation and execution of Data and Planning (Workforce Management) capabilities including relevant tools and infrastructure to support the centers operating the control testing activities through leadership of their team and stakeholders in the use of those capabilities, enabling data driven insights, control testing effectiveness, productivity improvements, staffing levers, service level management and cost optimization.

What will you do?
The Director, Data and Planning will set and execute on ECT’s vision, strategy and approach for data and capacity planning. They will lead a team with responsibility for the creation of capacity planning capabilities and ongoing workload forecasting and resource management. The Director will also lead a team to develop the ECT data and reporting infrastructure and accountable for the ongoing reporting and analysis, including supporting various management and governance cadences. Key activities include:

  • Develop the vision, approach and strategy for the ECT data capability
  • Execute on the data infrastructure for ECT including leading the initial build of the infrastructure, coordinate with Technology and Operations and Chief Data Office, build connections to existing data infrastructure across the enterprise (e.g. data lake, data warehouse), continue to evolve and improve the data infrastructure based on the group’s needs
  • Lead the ECT reporting cycles, including coordinating and leading the teams in developing the relevant reports, reviewing the results and sharing findings
  • Accountable for ECT data analysis to identify control testing insights/trends, support improvement efforts, process and performance management (e.g. monthly business review), service level monitoring, executive presentations
  • Support the ECT Control Testing Teams in capacity planning and workforce management to meet demand and deliver service levels, including resource allocation, staffing levers, lead the annual and monthly planning cycles, and inform hiring plans, staffing and location strategies
  • Assess key capacity improvement opportunities, including cross training, load balancing, and peak management and serve as subject matter expert by pioneering workforce optimization innovations and implementing external best practices. Develop the capacity improvement initiative roadmap with prioritized key initiatives to realize the key outcomes
  • Develop, implement and operate a workflow tool to enable capacity management and insights
  • Oversee a team of functional experts (data, capacity planning) in the delivery of the activities above, including building a strong culture, overseeing team performance and setting a clear direction for the team, promoting continuous learning and continuous improvement mindset to enable the team’s growth and advance the team’s capabilities

What do you need to succeed?
Must Have:

  • Minimum 7 - 10 years work experience in relevant or complimentary capacities
  • Strong people management experience leading cross-functional teams and experts with an innovation and client first focus
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to tailor to various levels of seniority with experience leading in a matrixed environment and strong negotiation and influencing skills
  • Knowledge/experience in capacity management, including deployment of workflow tool, capacity optimization strategies, managing Service Level commitments and use of operational levers
  • Expertise on data infrastructure, analytical methodologies, including AI capabilities

Nice to Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical disciplines such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Analytics
  • Previous experience working in highly regulated business environments in the financial services sector; Knowledge and/or experience working across different platforms and/or functional units of a diversified financial services firm, including exposure to multiple geographies
