AI Agent Engineer
Location: Toronto, ON
Reports to: AI Engineering and Delivery Lead
Works with: Solution Architects, Data Engineers, Product Managers, Business Stakeholders, and cross-functional AI Execution Squads
Role Overview
The AI Agent Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and optimizing autonomous AI agents that enhance advisor workflows, client engagement, and operational efficiency within BMO Wealth. This role blends technical expertise in large language models (LLMs), agent orchestration frameworks, and financial services domain knowledge to deliver intelligent, scalable solutions. The successful candidate will demonstrate hands-on experience with prompt engineering, agent safety, and performance monitoring, as well as strong collaboration and business acumen.
Key Responsibilities
- Agent Development & Integration:
- Architect and prototype intelligent agent solutions using frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, MS Copilot Studio, AutoGen, CrewAI, ReAct, and OpenAI APIs.
- Build and optimize autonomous agents for multi-step tasks (e.g., financial planning, client onboarding, investment analysis).
- Integrate agents with CRM, portfolio systems, and data platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, RESTful APIs).
- Develop and maintain prompt engineering and LLM fine-tuning workflows for conversational and task-oriented agents.
- Technical Implementation & Performance:
- Work with Technology teams to deploy and maintain GenAI-powered applications on cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) using containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Implement monitoring, logging, and automated testing for agent solutions; conduct user simulations and performance evaluations.
- Optimize agent workflows for scalability, reliability, and user experience.
- Implement safety, guardrails, and compliance mechanisms to ensure responsible agent behavior.
- Collaboration & Documentation:
- Work closely with product managers, compliance teams, and Wealth SMEs to align solutions with business goals and regulatory standards.
- Engage directly with business users to optimize agent capabilities for real-world impact.
- Create and maintain thorough technical documentation, demos, and training materials to support adoption and scale of GenAI capabilities.
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation:
- Stay current with advancements in agentic AI, LLMs, multi-agent systems, and financial technology.
- Rapidly prototype, experiment, and iterate on agent capabilities to improve business outcomes.
- Ethical, Social, and Regulatory Awareness:
- Ensure all agent solutions comply with financial services and Enterprise AI governance, regulations and ethical standards.
- Proactively identify and manage risks associated with agent deployment, including technical, operational, and reputational risks.
Required Skills & Tools
- Programming: Python, FastAPI, Flask, Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript a plus)
- Agent Frameworks: LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI, ReAct, MS Copilot Studio, OpenAI APIs
- ML/LLM Frameworks: PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, prompt engineering tools
- Cloud Platforms: Azure, AWS, GCP; containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Integration: RESTful APIs, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps
- Testing & Monitoring: pytest, unittest, logging frameworks, agent evaluation tools
- Documentation: Confluence, GitHub
- Security & Compliance: Familiarity with financial services regulations, agent safety, and secure coding practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years in AI/ML engineering, agent development, or software engineering
- Hands-on experience with prompt engineering, LLM fine-tuning, model quantization and agent orchestration frameworks
- Experience with multi-agent systems or reinforcement learning is an asset
- Certifications in Python, Cloud (Azure/AWS/GCP), or equivalent are assets
- Financial services or wealth management experience preferred
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with business users and cross-functional teams
Salary:
$103,200.00 - $192,000.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.
Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
