About the role

The Opportunity

Keyano College’s School of Health & Human Services is currently seeking a Social Work Chair for a term role ending on or before June 30, 2028. The position will also include chair responsibilities for the Child & Youth Care program.

Chairs play a crucial role in students’ academic success and development within the School. In addition to their responsibility for delivering high-quality instruction, fostering student engagement, and contributing to the overall academic environment of the institution, Chairs undertake administrative and/or supervisory duties as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean.

The Social Work Diploma program is designed to prepare graduates to practice with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations in rural and urban settings. In addition to the assigned Chair duties, the successful candidate will teach primarily in the Social Work Diploma program but may also teach across the school of Health and Human Services.

Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Curriculum development, preparation and instruction in the classroom (this could be virtually and/or in-person)

  • Performing field supervision and practicum support

  • Facilitation and review of clinical and work experience settings (where applicable)

  • Continuous professional development to maintain currency in one’s discipline.

  • Incorporate teaching and learning strategies that support student academic success.

  • Student consultation and advisement

  • Supervision and evaluation of students

  • Must comply with Human Rights Legislation as well as college policies and procedures and collective agreement obligations regarding equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Peer leader in providing direction to the respective program area.
  • Program planning in the form of administration of the development of new courses and programs, actively engaging with provincial bodies/community partners, consulting with faculty to align program goals, and preparing proposals and changes for Council consideration.
  • Consultation regarding budget creation and variance reporting, assessing operational and capital needs with the team, monitoring expenditures, and providing budget feedback to management.
  • Consultation on work loading of faculty and timetabling, leading program area meetings, and facilitating internal communications.
  • Addressing student concerns, liaising with provincial bodies/community partners, ensuring policy compliance, and contributing to program success.
  • Peer-mentoring through faculty classroom observations, student feedback and evaluations.
  • Conducting faculty interviews with the selection committee and facilitating orientation of instructors.
  • Facilitating program advisory committee meetings and ensure representation from diverse industry and business stakeholders, as well as related professionals.
  • Encouraging participation of faculty in college functions, voluntary training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Reporting on programs to the Government and Regulatory bodies.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Master in Social Work (MSW) is required.

  • Must be registered (or be eligible for registration), and a member in good standing, with the ACSW (Alberta College of Social Workers) and hold an active RSW in Alberta.

  • Two or more years of post MSW experience in the Social Work field

  • Minimum of five years of experience working as a registered social worker

  • Experience in reporting to Regulatory bodies and Government organizations.

Other Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence and a passion for student success.

  • Ability to teach at minimum diploma level courses.

  • Demonstrated excellent planning and organizational skills.

  • Willingness to engage in research and support students with work integrated learning.

  • Demonstrated experience engaging with community partners and supporting college-wide initiatives.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and classroom management skills.

  • Commitment to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in the learning environment.

  • Willingness to engage in continuous professional development.

  • Preference will be given to candidates possessing teaching experience at a post-secondary level, though we encourage candidates with related professional and or educational requirements to apply.

Additional Competencies Include:
Leadership and Mentoring - Faculty are responsible for acting as informal leaders of students and students may request mentorship from faculty members. Faculty could also serve as leaders in their academic field, as subject matter experts, course leads, program coordinators or chairs.

Safety - Faculty are responsible for following safety procedures at all times, identifying and reporting possible safety risks prior to an incident occurring, and participating in safety investigations as required.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills - Proven success in team building and collaboration though the use of excellent interpersonal skills; ability to develop and foster an atmosphere of trust, support, creativity, and innovation; excellent oral and written communications skills including public speaking and presentations.

Planning & Analytical Skills - Superior ability to plan, analyze, and manage day-to-day teaching duties.

Personal Credibility - Trusted and respected by others, protects confidential information, and is accountable for his/her actions and decisions; proven ability to serve as a role model for others when solving problems and dilemmas or confronting unethical actions.

Adult Education - Have knowledge and experience in adult principles of learning, teaching methodology, and curriculum.

Workforce and Community Development - Have knowledge of workforce trends and community needs in regard to education and training.

Technical Proficiency - Strong MS Office application skills. Have ability to adopt a systematic approach towards identifying and solving technical problems. Learning Management Systems and Virtual Livestream Platforms experience is an asset.
