The Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital (The Neuro) is the first health-research institution in the world to fully embrace Open Science at the institutional level. The Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI) has been created to drive that paradigm shift, with a dual mission of (1) enhancing full implementation of The Neuro’s Open Science Guiding Principles within The Neuro and (2) encouraging and incentivizing the national and global academic community to embrace and adopt Open Science.

Reporting to the CEO of TOSI, the TOSI Open Science Community Officer assists TOSI’s CEO in the operational coordination of the TOSI team and lead TOSI’s efforts to foster a community of institutional stakeholders to change the research culture within The Neuro towards one where Open Science is the norm for all engaged into research practice.

The Open Science Community Officer will be the primary point person and liaison between TOSI and Neuro stakeholders. The goal is to foster a community that promotes Open Science within The Neuro through engagement with researchers formally and informally to understand and record their needs and attitudes, facilitating training and knowledge sharing through events (e.g., hackathons, webinars, and seminars), and identifying and promoting the use of virtual spaces for knowledge sharing. Key to the role will be working with the TOSI Open Science Grassroots Initiatives Committee.

The Open Science Community Officer will work closely with the rest of the TOSI Team, with special attention paid to identifying how the team can interface with the greater Neuro community to bring about collective action and culture change.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the TOSI CEO to ensure that TOSI’s operations are designed and carried out in an efficient manner;
  • Lead the development and implementation of TOSI’s community engagement strategy, including the creation and tracking of a budget for engagement activities;
  • Be the primary point of contact for Neuro researchers concerning Open Science and act as a liaison between TOSI and the Neuro researcher community;
  • Work with the TOSI Grassroots Committee (GRC), the TOSI Team, and other Neuro stakeholders to proactively identify Open Science needs and organize both in person and virtual activities to promote: Community building, peer-to-Peer knowledge translation and creation, knowledge translation through trainings, webinars, workshops, and seminars, career incentives and awards
  • Work with the GRC, TOSI Team, and other Neuro stakeholders to design and develop documentation, training, and support resources to promote the uptake of Open Science practices;
  • Ensure the optimal delivery of projects and programs identified as a priority by TOSI leadership;
  • Work with internal units and external organizations to share knowledge and organize events;
  • Help design and run events and communications on various digital platforms (The Neuro Website, Microsoft Teams, the Google Suite, Slack, etc);
  • Collect, curate, and disseminate educational resources and Open Science tools through digital platforms (e.g., the Neuro Website);
  • Attend Neuro events as TOSI ambassador;
  • Develop a clear overview of Open Science efforts and initiatives at The Neuro and ensure efficient transfer of relevant information between them and to the Neuro community;
  • Identify and implement methods of measuring the impact of OS at The Neuro.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Experience leading training strategies, facilitation, and project operations etc. in a research context
  • Experience working with project management tools to prioritize a wide range and volume of activities;
  • Excellent creative writing, public speaking skills, marketing, and editing skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to translate scientific, technical information and complex concepts and data into accessible, audience-specific materials;
  • Knowledge of internet and web-based technologies and applications and their importance to internal and external communications and knowledge sharing;
  • Exceptional attention to detail required to prepare documents that are consistently of the highest quality in terms of content, format, and design;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects;
  • Ability to effectively work with and provide counsel to peers, senior management, leadership teams, and advisory groups;
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, changing, deadline-oriented environment;
  • Strong networking and relationship building skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of staff;
  • Demonstrated experience with the McGill environment as well as the field of neuroscience a very strong asset;
  • Demonstrated professionalism and discretion, and exceptional interpersonal skills
  • English and French, spoken and written.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 on a scale of 0-4
