Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Emergency Weather Response worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties, typical of the job class:

  • Monitors the environment and clients/residents to ensure safety and security; completes

regular client/resident status checks and room searches as required

  • Develops and implements case management of assigned clients/residents; assists

clients/residents in establishing goals, monitoring progress, and prepares discharge plan

  • Maintains and updates all appropriate documentation (including in-out and incident log

books) related to clients/residents and initiates any new documentation

  • complete all reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army
  • Coordinates and facilitates resident programming as required
  • Performs intake and discharge procedures for clients/residents as assigned
  • Monitors appropriate behavior; intervenes in crisis situations, provides emotional support and advocacy as required
  • Distributes funds to residents in accordance with established policies guidelines
  • Engages in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect
  • Performs required scheduled check-ins of residents on passes in community; escorts

residents in the community when necessary and monitors behavior

  • Liaises with Police, funders, court personnel, community agencies, families, and other staff members
  • Provides orientation to newly hired staff, volunteers, students
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Abusive people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Isolation
  • Work schedule affecting lifestyle
  • Exposure to drugs and alcohol

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to bodily fluids and bodily waste
  • Sharp objects
  • Other dangerous situations

Education and Certifications:

  • Addictions Counselling Courses
  • Social services Diploma or related Diploma or Degree
  • Minimum one year Experience in frontline social service work
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Criminal Record Check
  • CPR, First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Training an asset
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training

Preferred Skills/Capabilities:

  • Strong service ethic and a friendly disposition with the public
  • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions
  • Team oriented and able to take initiative
  • Minimum on call availability required
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • The performance of the job requires high amounts of keyboarding/Manual record keeping, and occasionally lifting/packing clients/residents property/personal effects and engaging in recreational activities.
  • The performance of the job requires attentive listening and observation of body language, continuously monitoring the environment, multitasking and reading. Ability to work in a fast paced environment, to meet deadlines and cope with stressful situations.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening

HOURS:

  • Casual shifts 7:00 pm – 7:00 am and/or 6:00 am – 10:00 am
  • November 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025
  • MUST be available for 3 shifts per week for Extreme Weather Response

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $23.12 to $23.48 with a maximum of $23.83.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
