Position Description

Unit Summary The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) is a collaborative program funded and operated jointly by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Hospital. The Program is committed to change and innovation, through education, service and research, to bring the highest quality science into healthcare for the benefit of the community and to participate in the clinical application and interpretation of the science.

Position Summary Practices and performs, under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) a variety of laboratory tests and procedures, with accuracy and efficiency, in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP).

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent
  • OSMT Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate
  • Data entry and order skills in Meditech
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment

Responsibilities

  • Maintains competence in the receiving, handling, processing, identification, recording, labeling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory testing
  • Registering and accessioning using Meditech
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment according to HRLMP procedures. Reports failure and maintains documentation of laboratory equipment according to HRLMP procedures.
  • Actively participates in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to meet HRLMP objectives
  • Recognizes unusual situations and reports immediately to a MLT
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Assists in maintaining inventory control
  • Maintains competency as a MLA through participation in training and continuing education
  • Must maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times
  • Maintains competence and certification in transportation of dangerous goods
  • Transcribes referral laboratory results accurately
  • Preparation of patient samples for virological/molecular testing
  • Other tasks as directed by the MLT
