The Program
Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of persons in their communities through a variety of programs and services.
This program in Edmonton Alberta, encourages persons with developmental disabilities to maximize their independence, further develop their unique strengths and enjoy community integration through social, recreational and community activities.
This program provides supports for two female clients who have FASD, mild intellectual disability, developmental childhood trauma, and a past history of addiction, self-harm and suicidal ideation.

The Position
The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. The DSWs will support adults to gain independent living skills, including assistance with daily living activities including meal preparation, household chores, laundry, etc. and community access (accessing transportation to educational, recreation and community programs/events). They also, mentor and advocate for the client, and empower them to be self reliant and confident. This position reports to the Team Leader.
This is a complex needs behavior position as the individuals can be verbally and physically aggressive and requires mental health supports and interventions through out all shifts.
An additional $3.30 per hour will be paid when supporting complex needs clients. This additional amount does not apply to scheduled trainings/meetings and non-complex shifts.
Scheduling
Two (2) permanent part-time positions that will work the following schedules:
- Position 1= 16 hours per week, Saturday and Sunday 1500-2300
- Position 2= 46 hours bi weekly, on a two week rotation
In Your Role You Will
- Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene (if needed).
- Provide supports as per the individual's care plan
- Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
- Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.
- Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client
- A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.
*** Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team. ***
As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
- Previous experience providing specialized supports such as FASD, drug and alcohol addictions, intergenerational trauma, mental health, suicide and other behavioural issues.
- A positive role model; calm, confident, patient, self motivated and motivates others
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, who can set & maintain healthy boundaries.
- MUST HAVE Valid class 5 driver license, suitable driving abstract and reliable vehicle
- High School or GED Diploma
ALSO helpful, but will train if needed:
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
- Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
