As an Indeterminate or Job Share Laboratory Technical Specialist you will earn a Tier One: $10/hour premium allowance.

Reporting to the Manager Laboratory Services, the Laboratory Technical Specialist (T3) will work oversee the functions of the Transfusion Medicine area of the Laboratory, assist the Laboratory Manager with the daily functioning of the Laboratory and provide support in the development of quality systems of the laboratory. The Specialist will work collaboratively with the Laboratory Manager toward achieving and maintaining Laboratory Accreditation through Accreditation Canada. The position is required to share standby and on-call duties with Laboratory staff to provide weekend and night coverage.

Key Responsibilities Includes The Following

• Examines and analyzes a variety of biological samples using recognized international laboratory practices to ensure that medical and non-medical professionals have laboratory results required to diagnose, treat and manage disease.
• Performs, records, interprets, and monitors Quality Control on all instruments and procedures to ensure the precision and accuracy of results reported.
• Will aid in extending the life expectancy of instrumentation by ensuring the continued maintenance of laboratory equipment to maintain productivity, minimize downtime
• Acts as a resource for Laboratory Medicine
• Oversees the activities of the Transfusion Medicine Service to ensure clients receive safe, timely and appropriate blood products by
• Collects and analyzes laboratory samples and performs diagnostic tests on patients as part of the health care team.
• Analyzes samples using complex laboratory instrumentation and manual techniques.
• Reviews, verifies and releases patient results through the Laboratory Information System.
• Report critical results to physicians or Health Centers

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through:

• A diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a Canadian College or University.
• Must be registered with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science – general or RT
• Minimum of five years’ experience as a Laboratory Technologist with a minimum of one-year recent experience in each discipline: Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine;
• Successful candidates must be able to acquire within 3 months and remain current with the following training and certifications; WHMIS, Hand Hygiene and Transportation of Dangerous Goods;
• Advanced Certification (ART) or a Bachelor of Science or Medical Laboratory Technology Degree is an asset;
