Position Summary
We are building modular, prefabricated data center capacity, and thermal performance is at the heart of the product. We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer – Thermal to own the thermal architecture of our modules — from heat capture at the rack to heat rejection or, better, heat reuse. You will design and optimize cooling systems for high-density compute while developing heat recovery solutions that turn waste heat into a valuable output: district heating, or on-site reuse. This role blends rigorous thermal engineering with product thinking — everything you design must be manufacturable in a factory, shippable, and repeatable across deployments.
Key Responsibilities
Thermal Design & Optimization
Own the thermal design of our modular data center units — heat load modeling, cooling system design (air and liquid, including direct-to-chip and/or immersion where applicable), airflow/CFD analysis, and PUE optimization. Design for N+1 or other redundancy in cooling paths and define failure-mode behavior for the thermal system. Select refrigerants and working fluids with attention to efficiency, low-GWP/regulatory compliance, and long-term availability.
Heat Recovery & Reuse
Design heat recovery systems: heat exchangers, heat pump integration for temperature lifting, and connections to reuse pathways such as district heating, greenhouses, or industrial processes. Evaluate temperature-lift vs. COP tradeoffs to size heat pump equipment appropriately for each reuse pathway. Assess the economics of heat recovery per deployment — how much heat, at what temperature, and what it's worth. Define a standard heat-export interface so recovery can be added or omitted per site without redesign. Specify materials and water treatment strategy suited to variable return-fluid conditions across different reuse applications.
Engineering Deliverables & Cross-Discipline Coordination
Produce mechanical deliverables (P&IDs, equipment schedules, piping layouts) for factory fabrication, and support factory acceptance testing and site commissioning. Coordinate thermal control sequences and setpoints with the controls/BMS integration team to ensure cooling behavior is properly monitored and actuated. Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (ASHRAE, ASME B31/BPVC, CSA/UL, local mechanical codes), including refrigerant handling regulations, and drive design improvements across module generations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. 5+ years in HVAC/thermal systems design for data centers, mission-critical facilities, or industrial process cooling. Strong fundamentals in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics, with demonstrated application to real systems — not just analysis. Hands-on experience designing hydronic systems: heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping networks, glycol systems, and water treatment considerations. Experience with at least one of: liquid cooling for high-density IT, heat recovery/heat pump systems, or district energy. Proficiency with thermal/hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., HAP, TRACE, IES, EnergyPlus, or equivalent) and CFD tools (e.g., 6SigmaRoom, Ansys, or similar). Ability to produce and review P&IDs, mechanical schematics, and construction-grade documentation. Willingness to travel (approx. [20–40]%) to fabrication facilities and deployment sites.
Preffered Qualifications
Direct experience with waste heat recovery from data centers — heat pump temperature lifting, district heating interconnection, or ERF/heat reuse reporting under frameworks like the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. Experience with direct-to-chip liquid cooling and CDU design for AI/HPC densities (50–150+ kW/rack). Familiarity with thermal storage design (sensible or latent) and demand-side flexibility. Experience in a factory-built or modular construction environment. Knowledge of refrigerant regulations and low-GWP refrigerant selection (heat pump applications).
