The Faculty's Information Technology Office provides the vision and leadership for the development and implementation of technological information systems, processes, and associated technology to support Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering academic mission and administrative operations. The Faculty Information Technology Office is comprised of a team of highly motivated IT professionals who work collaboratively with colleagues in administrative units and academic departments across the Faculty to provide timely, quality service and innovative technological solutions.

Your Opportunity As the Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for supporting the configuration, support, and maintenance of core operational infrastructure systems and services in the in the Faculty Information Technology Office at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Working with a variety of services (Active Directory servers, file servers, Linux servers, databases, and Azure cloud services), you will deploy, install, and support the maintenance and availability of these services. Your proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and maintain/shift focus to accommodate the critical nature and urgency of these services will be essential to our team's success.

The System Administrator will be accountable for the tasks below:

  • Performing daily infrastructure health check to ensure stability, reliability, and security.
  • Handling day-to-day production support requests and timely fulfillment of onboarding and offboarding requests.
  • Managing user access and performing periodic access attestations to ensure the Faculty IT Office remains compliant with audit requirements.
  • Monitoring and managing SSL certificates, timely renewal/automation of certificates to ensure the web applications are secure
  • Supporting operating system updates and quarterly security patching for servers, desktops/laptops, and related systems.
  • Serving as the first point of contact for Client Services team providing technical support to resolve complex desktop related issues.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Analyzing and recommending network and system solutions including desktop/server infrastructure upgrades, enhancements, improvements and newly required service deployments.
  • Applying OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.
  • Performing daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, system and key processes, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Troubleshooting complex computer system problems and network connectivity issues.
  • Executing security measures for network devices and introducing variations as required, using institutional firewalls and/or infrastructure.
  • Translating tier-1 and tier-2 feedback into actionable solutions.
  • Creating complex and technical documentation and user support guides (network topology maps, standard operating procedures, checklists, etc).
  • Collaborating on cost estimates, milestones, and other elements of project planning.
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related experience providing IT support in a high-volume, client-centric, hybrid environment with critical administrative and research applications.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of related experience working with developers; familiarity and demonstrated DevOps experience supporting developers and their tools & workflows (Git/GitHub/Azure DevOps, CI/CD, on-prem and cloud deployments using Azure).
  • Expert knowledge of Windows Server, Windows Group Policy development and deployment, Windows Powershell scripting, application and server virtualization (VMWare), Remote Desktop Services, Active Directory, Print and File Servers.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in enterprise-grade identity and access management service (Microsoft Active Directory), Windows Server operating systems (2019 and 2022), Linux (CentOS/RedHat, Ubuntu and derivatives), clustering technologies, Microsoft SQL Server, back-up procedures, disaster recovery, and SaaS/PaaS platforms (Office 365 & Azure).
  • A thorough knowledge of working with network switches, including low-level networking protocols, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, TCP/IP, TLS/SSL.
  • Experience with complex network and firewall management (PaloAlto).
  • Experience in configuring and deploying detection and prevention technologies (SentinelOne, Tenable).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to solve complex technical and logistical problems and the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical users.

Assets (Nonessential)

  • ITIL and Information Security certifications.
  • Knowledge of web servers, document management platforms, and Endpoint Systems Management Appliances (KACE, etc).
  • Certificates and/or working towards certifications of Microsoft.
  • Familiarity with the University environment, governance, and policies.
