Why this role is important? Basic Function The Pharmacy Compounding Lead is responsible for developing, organizing, and overseeing all activities related to pharmacy compounding. Responsibilities also include all administrative duties related to the scheduling and dispensing of compounded medications. The Pharmacy Compounding Lead communicates with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other parties involved in providing healthcare to the patient, other Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network (SDMSHN) team members, and patients to ensure adequate quantities of compounded medications are dispensed at all times for continued patient care. The Pharmacy Compounding Lead coordinates relevant information with the customer service, reimbursement services, operations and finance departments regarding medication dispensing and appropriate billing.

Nature and Scope The Pharmacy Compounding Lead plays a pivotal role in leading SDMSHN Pharmacy Teams to ensure that pharmacies are adhering to SDMSHN compounding policies and procedures that are compliant with regulatory authorities as well as NAPRA and USP 800/797/795 guidelines. The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of pharmacy practices and should possess a complete understanding of pharmacy processes related to medication use, patient eligibility, and billing accuracy. The Pharmacy Compounding Lead will be called upon to support and/or lead special initiatives and projects as required by the Pharmacy Supervisor and/or Specialty Pharmacy Manager.

What You Will Do

  • Perform sterile preparation technical tasks and delegate as required
  • Develop, regularly review, and update compounding policies and procedures that will be applicable to all SDMSHN Pharmacies
  • Collaborate with SDMSHN Pharmacies to ensure competency of cleaning and disinfecting personnel
  • Develop and maintain the compounding training and assessment program for all SDMSHN Pharmacies
  • Collaborate with SDMSHN Pharmacies to ensure that compounding facilities and equipment are maintained, calibrated or certified, according to the specifications or standards of manufacturers
  • Evaluate semi-annual clean room reports for all SDMSHN Pharmacies and work with Specialty Pharmacy Managers on corrective actions
  • Collaborate with SDMSHN Pharmacies to ensure that mandatory and supplementary compounding references are available and updated on a regular basis
  • Attend external continuing education compounding courses to be knowledgeable in current practices and maintain competency
  • Support Pharmacists in technical tasks related to medication preparation and patient files
  • Clean Room Activities
  • Conducts quality control and sterility testing
  • Performs sterile compounding using principles of NAPRA/USP800/797/795 following appropriate aseptic technique utilizing required Pharmacist/Pharmacy Technician checks
  • Checks final compounded product
  • Ensures adequate inventory levels of clean room supplies and reorders as necessary
  • Medication preparation related activities
  • Review received prescriptions and documents for completeness
  • Triage production and workflow
  • Accurate and timely entry of demographic information, payer information, clinical notes and prescriptions into computer systems
  • Generation of medication labels to enable timely dispensing and delivery
  • Accurate labeling and preparing of medications for review by the pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician (where applicable)
  • Collation and filing of dispensing documents according to Pharmacy regulations and procedures
  • Follow-up on any unsuccessful deliveries or back ordered items
  • Fax and/or call physicians’ offices to acquire reorders on medications in a timely fashion to maintain patient therapy
  • Conduct product verification (final check) on prescription orders to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to delivery, as required
  • Coordinate medication and infusion equipment to ensure continuity of therapy
  • Escalate all clinical verification aspects of dispensing and patient counselling to the Pharmacist
  • Inventory - Order pharmacy products and perform quarterly physical counts according to processes and procedures in order to maintain pharmacy inventory levels
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, disposal of drugs in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements
  • Process credit card billings for patients and review each order for accuracy and completeness
  • Record keeping, including timely filing of documents and prescription hard copies.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality according to provincial and federal regulations
  • Follow Required Operating Procedures (ROPs) and SOPs requirements at all times per company procedure
  • The Pharmacy Technician deals with inquiries within the scope of their knowledge and within SOP and Provincial parameters; transfer calls to the pharmacist or other team members as appropriate
  • Perform final check of prescription orders prepared by other Pharmacy Assistants
  • Report all Adverse Events (AE) and Product Technical Complaints (PTC) immediately or as soon as possible upon becoming aware of the event as per current policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, engagement, and apply Blue Culture and Core Values in all interactions
  • Perform other duties, support and/or lead special initiatives and projects, as required by Pharmacy Supervisor and/or Specialty Pharmacy Manager

What You Will Need

  • Pharmacy Technician certification and maintain registration with Provincial College of Pharmacy
  • Five (5) years of relevant pharmacy experience with a minimum of 1 (one) year of sterile compounding experience and/or training or equivalent combination of both
  • Previous sterile (hazardous and non-hazardous) compounding experience an asset
  • Knowledge of USP797/USP800/NAPRA Standards an asset
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to handle multiple demands made simultaneously under short time constraints
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy software systems and MS Office Applications
  • Flexible and adaptable to changes of responsibility reflective of business needs including rotational shifts
  • Overtime may be required occasionally
