The National Arts Centre (NAC) is Canada's bilingual, multi-disciplinary home for the performing arts. The NAC presents, creates, produces, and co-produces performing arts programming in various streams-the NAC Orchestra, Dance, English Theatre, French Theatre, Indigenous Theatre, and Popular Music and Variety-and nurtures the next generation of audiences and artists from across Canada. Job Reports To:

Manager, Children and Youth Programming, Accessibility and Special Projects

Key Activities

Under the supervision of the Manager, Children and Youth Programming, Accessibility and Special Projects, the Learning, Engagement and Community Outreach Coordinator is responsible for audience development for French Theatre (FT) programming and for the coordination of FT’s education and community outreach activities, based on the programming established by the Associate Artistic Director of Youth Programming. The Learning, Engagement and Community Outreach Coordinator reports to FT and will work closely with the NAC’s multidisciplinary Arts Alive team.

Coordination of school programming

  • Work with the Manager, Children and Youth Programming, Accessibility and Special Projects to help plan FT school programming (e.g., student matinees, pre-show workshops, in-school artist residencies, backstage tours, inclusion and accessibility initiatives) for the upcoming season;

  • Maintain regular communication with educators in the Ottawa-Gatineau area to inform them about FT’s upcoming school programming and share all necessary teaching and accessibility materials;

  • Oversee the publication of online content regarding student matinees, workshops and in-school residencies;

  • Contribute to the development of promotional materials for school programming, in collaboration with Marketing and Communications strategists, and coordinate their distribution to schools;

  • Oversee the welcoming of school groups to the NAC for student matinees and workshops, working closely with Arts Alive and the Visitor Experience (front-of-house) department, and implement accessible welcoming practices tailored to the specific needs of audience members;

  • Develop virtual teaching materials for schools and families, as well as accessibility guides for groups with specific needs;

  • Ensure an FT presence during workshops and artist residencies at schools and the NAC, supervise teaching artists, and occasionally participate in workshop design and facilitation;

  • Meet with the Arts Alive team and coordinators from other disciplines on a regular basis to discuss best practices, process improvements and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

French Theatre audience development

  • Represent FT at community, academic and cultural events;
  • Work with the Artistic Programming team and in close collaboration with Marketing and Communications to develop strategies to promote and expand FT’s public programming to new audiences;
  • Coordinate outreach initiatives for FT’s children/youth programming to reach new families of diverse backgrounds;
  • Strengthen relationships with community partners, with an emphasis on inclusion, accessibility and diversity;
  • Develop new partnerships with community organizations that do not already have an established relationship with the NAC;
  • Build and maintain strong and lasting relationships with schools and universities in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, and stay attuned to the needs of educators and new developments in the education space;
  • Maintain an ongoing collaborative relationship with the Audience Engagement department and take part in knowledge-sharing sessions on best practices in audience development.

Skill Requirements

  • University degree in a related field and at least 3 years of professional experience in the performing arts sector, community outreach and/or audience development; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Passion for and curiosity about theatre, strong knowledge of the performing arts landscape for young audiences, and familiarity with the show production process (an asset);
  • Experience in community outreach and audience development;
  • Familiarity with the education landscape in the Ottawa-Gatineau area;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to equity, inclusion and accessibility practices;
  • Strong planning, organizational and coordination skills;
  • Ability to take the lead and initiative, and strong teamwork skills;
  • Ability to identify and manage priorities and to work under pressure;
  • Fluency in French and intermediate proficiency in English;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Availability to work evenings and frequent weekends and to travel locally and regionally;
  • Proficiency with standard computer programs (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and digital platforms;
  • Ability to move around freely and perform tasks that require handling and/or moving lightweight materials, without accommodation or assistive devices.
