Opportunity

MacEwan University is seeking up to 2 individuals for Theatre and Practicum Technicians for full-time continuing opportunities with the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications.

As a member of the technical team, the Theatre and Practicum Technician supports the growing number of rentals in the Allard Hall venues. This role also assists Theatre Department performances as a practicum monitor, ensuring venues operate safely and according to intended use. You will be responsible for maintaining performance spaces, operating MacEwan-owned equipment, overseeing user activities, and providing technical support for both internal and external productions in areas including audio, video, lighting, stage management, and rigging.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating and maintaining lighting systems (including computerized and moving lights), mixing live sound on digital consoles, using Pro Tools, and supporting projection, rigging, stage, and basic scenic systems;
  • Reading, creating, and maintaining technical drawings using AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or comparable software, and assisting with production planning, costing, scheduling, load-ins, strikes, and changeovers;
  • Supporting Theatre Department students through guidance, mentorship, and supervision within practicum-based courses, labs, rehearsals, performances, and work calls;
  • Reinforcing professional theatre practices and safety standards in all instructional and production environments while instructing students in the safe and proper use of theatre equipment, tools, and facilities;
  • Understanding the educational process and how technical support contributes to student learning outcomes;
  • Performing routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs and assisting with inventory tracking and equipment check-out systems;
  • Preparing and setting up equipment for classes, productions, and events in Allard Hall; and
  • Collaborating with faculty, staff, students, visiting artists, guest instructors, and external renters, and participating in departmental meetings and production planning sessions.

Skills

You will have:

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills;
  • Close attention to detail;
  • The ability to read and produce technical drawings using AutoCAD, VectorWorks, or comparable software;
  • Experience using AVID, Yamaha, Midas and Allen and Heath series consoles, ETC EOS family console software and hardware and DANTE.
  • A working understanding of Audio Architect, Crestron, CISCO managed network switches software and/or Paradigm software would be considered an asset, as would electronics repair and maintenance skills.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a 2-year diploma in Technical Theatre or a related field.
  • Current Standard First Aid, including CPR and AED.
  • A minimum of 3 years of technical theatre experience.
  • Experience mentoring technicians would be considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Position Requirements

  • This position is required to work on campus.
  • This position requires evening and weekend work.
