Every day, more than 1,200 people work with the YMCAs of Québec network, providing a variety of services that create positive change in people’s lives.

Camp YMCA Kanawana is Quebec’s oldest residential summer camp. We are looking to marry our tradition of YMCA value-based camping with leading edge programming while being Quebec’s environmental education leader. Staff live on site for the duration of the summer, which starts in mid-June and finishes at the end of August. Salaries include food, lodging and transportation to and from camp.

Reporting to the Camp Coordinator and/or Integration Specialist, the Companion is responsible for integration of a child with special needs into day camp. S/he integrates the child into a group of children of the same age, and encourages the animation and participation in appropriate activities. S/he participates in the full life of camp as well as establishes and maintains positive relationships with the children, parents and the camp team.

This position provides supervision for the camper during the entirety of the day. They wil supervise the special needs child during all meals and activities and depending on the level of care needed for the child will accompany the child to the washroom and spend time with them during the scheduled free period in the day. The companion will sleep in the cabin/tent with the campers to ensure they can provide the best care if they are needed throughout the night.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the safety, security, health and well-being of campers, staff and program participants at all times;
  • Ensure policies regarding program delivery, care of campers and staff conduct are respected at all times;
  • Counsellors work as a team and are equally responsible for their campers;
  • Participation in compulsory staff training;
  • Sleep with assigned cabin/tent group in designated tent or cabin;
  • Lead or assist in daily specialized activities (Interest Groups) for campers;
  • Plan group activities for a cabin/tent group for four sessions (each session is twelve days long);
  • Organize and lead designated camp activities;
  • Ensure program areas and activities are safe, fun, engaging, and well-run;
  • Ensure equipment is safe and in excellent condition;
  • Attend nightly section meetings;
  • Attend all-staff meetings as required;
  • Complete a camper evaluation at the end of each session for all campers in the assigned cabin/tent group;
  • Reporting any safety hazards or maintenance deficiencies to the Section Director;
  • Reporting to the Section Director;
  • Providing a general camp evaluation to the Director at the end of the summer.
  • Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy in both specific position and association, and participate in the Annual Campaign and/or other fundraising events.
  • Adhere to the YMCA’s Child Protection Policies and Procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • In possession of a valid First Aid/CPR certificate (training will be offered in May).
  • Fluency in spoken and written French (required).

Fluency in spoken and written English (required based on operational needs related to clientele and communications).

  • Passionate about working with children and the environment
  • Experience working with children
  • Have no criminal record in connection with employment.
