About STEM Collegiate STEM Collegiate Canada is a public charter school in Edmonton that has been designed from the ground up as a centre of STEM learning and innovation for students in grades 7-12. From the content of our courses to the leading-edge equipment in our labs, we develop higher level thinking skills by connecting classroom learning to the real world. Position Overview The Science Department Head is a leadership position responsible for both high-quality classroom instruction and the coordination and development of the high school science program. This role works closely with school administration to support instructional excellence, alignment with Alberta Education curriculum, and the continued growth of STEM-focused programming.
The successful candidate will teach high school science courses while providing leadership to the entire science department (Grade 7 to 12) through collaboration, instructional support, and program development.
This is a probationary contract commencing on August 20, 2026 and concluding on June 30, 2027.
Department Leadership
- Provide leadership and coordination for the high school science department.
- Facilitate collaboration among science teachers to support consistent instructional practices and assessment standards.
- Support department planning, including course sequencing, common assessments, and alignment with Alberta Education program outcomes.
- Lead discussions and initiatives focused on improving student achievement in science.
- Support new teachers and contribute to a positive, collaborative department culture.
- Work with school administration on long-term development of STEM programming and laboratory experiences.
Instruction and Student Learning
- Teach high school science courses such as Science 10, Biology (20, 30), Chemistry (20, 30), and/or Physics (20, 30).
- Implement strong, evidence-based instructional practices that promote deep understanding of scientific concepts.
- Use assessment data to inform instruction and support student success.
- Prepare students for success on provincial assessments and post-secondary pathways.
- Create engaging learning experiences that connect scientific concepts to real-world applications.
Program Development
- Support the integration of STEM-focused learning experiences within the science program.
- Collaborate with other departments to support interdisciplinary STEM initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of innovative learning opportunities that extend beyond the traditional classroom.
Qualifications
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
- Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent recognized by Alberta Education.
- Minimum five years of successful classroom teaching experience, preferably in high school science.
- Background or demonstrated interest in instructional leadership, department coordination, or educational leadership is an asset.
Skills And Competencies
- Strong instructional practice grounded in curriculum outcomes and assessment for learning.
- Effective classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- High level of organization, flexibility, and ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities.
- Commitment to collaboration and professional growth.
- Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary planning and applied learning experiences.
- Comfort using educational technology and digital learning platforms.
