Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Maintenance and Technical Services, the Reliability and Maintenance Student will support the Maintenance leadership team in the planning, documentation, and execution of capital and operational projects.

This role focuses on developing AFE (Authorization for Expenditure) documentation, supporting project coordination, and creating clear, standardized technical work instructions for plant equipment. The student will work cross-functionally with Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations to ensure projects and processes are well-documented, cost-justified, and executable.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain hands-on experience in maintenance planning, capital project planning and development (AFE), and technical writing within a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. AFE & Project Support

• Assist in the development of AFE/business case packages for approved and proposed capital projects
• Support cost estimation, scope definition, and project justification documentation
• Gather technical data, vendor quotes, and internal inputs to support project submissions
• Track project timelines, documentation, and approvals
• Maintain organized records of project files and supporting documentation

1. Technical Documentation & Work Instructions

• Develop and update standardized work instructions (SOPs) for maintenance and equipment processes
• Translate technical information into clear, user-friendly instructions for trades and operators
• Review existing procedures and identify gaps, inefficiencies, or inconsistencies
• Partner with maintenance trades to validate accuracy of instructions

1. Maintenance & Asset Data Support

• Assist with preventative maintenance (PM) documentation and updates
• Support equipment data collection, asset classification, and record accuracy
• Help analyze maintenance trends, downtime data, or recurring issues
• Update systems such as PM programs, asset registers, or document repositories

1. Process Improvement & Planning

• Observe maintenance and operational processes to identify improvement opportunities
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to efficiency, safety, and reliability
• Assist in developing improved workflows, layouts, or documentation
• Participate in project meetings and cross-functional discussions

1. General Engineering & Administrative Support

• Assist with technical drawings, documentation, or AutoCAD updates (if applicable)
• Support communication between Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations
• Prepare reports, summaries, and presentations for leadership
• Perform other duties and project work as assigned

Qualifications

Education

• Currently enrolled in a Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering program (or related discipline)
• Completion of at least 2 years of study preferred

Skills & Experience

• Strong technical aptitude with interest in maintenance and manufacturing environments
• Excellent written communication skills (this role heavily leans on documentation quality)
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to interpret technical information and translate it into practical instructions
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Experience with AutoCAD or CMMS systems considered an asset
