The Science Technical Centre (STC) provides centralized technical services through its Electronics and Machine Shops, supporting teaching and research activities across the Faculty of Science and other SFU units. The team designs, repairs, maintains, and fabricates scientific and laboratory equipment, ensuring reliability, safety, and cost-effective operation of research infrastructure. STC contributes directly to SFUs academic and research priorities by minimizing lab downtime, supporting innovation, and extending the lifespan of specialized equipment. The team culture is collaborative, service-oriented, and solutions-focused, emphasizing technical excellence, safety, mentorship, and strong partnerships with faculty, staff, and students.

About the Role

The Electronics Technologist provides design, repair, and advisory support for teaching and research equipment across the Faculty of Science and other SFU units. The role supports both specialized and routine laboratory equipment, helping ensure continuity of teaching and research activities. This position contributes to departmental priorities by minimizing equipment downtime, maintaining safety compliance, and supporting in-house technical capacity under the direction of the Manager. Working collaboratively within the Electronics Shop, the technologist assists with consultation, system design, fabrication, programming, testing, documentation, and knowledge transfer.

The Electronics Technologist plays a critical role in supporting teaching and research across the Faculty of Science by providing expert design, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of scientific and laboratory instrumentation. Working within the Science Technical Centre, this position helps ensure that research labs, teaching facilities, and safety systems remain reliable, compliant, and operational. The role contributes directly to departmental priorities by minimizing equipment downtime, extending asset lifecycles, and reducing reliance on external service providers. Upcoming initiatives include supporting increasingly complex research instrumentation, assisting with custom electronics design. This role offers hands-on technical work, close collaboration with faculty and researchers, and the opportunity to contribute to a service-driven, problem-solving team that supports SFU's research and innovation goals.
