There is a full-time upper intermediate teaching position being offered at Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw School for the 2026-2027 school year, starting on August 31, 2026. This is a one-year position with the possibility of continuation.
The Gwa'sala-‘Nakwaxda'xw School is a band-operated independent school located in Port Hardy, British Columbia that enrolls 125 students from Preschool to Grade 7 (https://www.gnschool.ca or the Gwa'sala- ‘Nakwaxda'xw School on Facebook)
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate to successfully manage a classroom and meet individual student goals
- Use a variety of assessment data to support the planning of differentiated lessons and ongoing instructional changes necessary to meet student needs
- Work positively with students, parents, staff and other community members
- Use a variety of programs, strategies, and activities to realize the components of the curriculum and meet the needs of students, including experience with regulation strategies and trauma-informed practices
- Work with a school-based team and outside agencies to develop plans, deliver instruction and assess effectiveness of intervention to meet the needs of a diverse student population and engage children in extra-curricular activities
- Be willing to participate in cultural, school, and community events and learn from parents and community members
Education and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate
- Teaching experience in grades 4-7 is an asset
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current instructional and assessment theory and practice
- Knowledge of current theory and practice regarding inclusion, differentiation and diversity
- Knowledge of BC Indigenous people and experience working with Indigenous communities
- Knowledge of the BC Ministry of Education Building Student Success Curriculum
- Ability to collaborate with a dedicated staff
- Willingness to improve practice through professional development
- Solid classroom management skills
- Experience incorporating technology into teaching practice
- Have the ability to differentiate and provide inclusive learning opportunities that reflect the unique needs and interests of all students
