Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, the salvation army. This position provides support to the food bank program and other programs provided by the community & family services.
Accountabilities:
Food Bank
- Aid with processing, unloading, documenting, and sorting donations of food for the Food Bank program and assist with preparing donated items for distribution.
- Support individuals/families accessing food bank to meet their wants/needs of food (assisting with points and shopping experience).
- Process incoming food donations.
- Daily cleaning of food bank and preparation for following day.
- Organize and maintain general operation of storage space (sorting food, checking dates, stocking shelves).
- Assist and support Food Drives and other fundraising events.
- Inputting data into Link2Feed and other statistical reporting.
- Ensure all clients are treated with dignity and respect, and maintain all information in confidence.
- Receive phone calls for food bank intake.
- Record statistical data in a clear, organized, and accurate manner.
Program Support
- Assist with set up/clean up of Food and other programs.
Health and Safety
- Adherence to all health and safety standards.
- Assist with ensuring that the Food Bank is maintained in regard to organization, appearance, maintenance and general cleanliness and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as required, in collaboration with Community Ministries Coordinator.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Governance Boards and Councils: None
Internal:
- Corps Officer, supervisor, volunteers, staff.
External:
- Community, clients.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Community Services Manager
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Assist with food bank materials management such as donations/product flow and distribution of same.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required.
- Ability to lift/move more than 25 lbs. and this job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently; working in a standing position for long periods of time.
- Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
- Your supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Required to wear appropriate Salvation Army identification when dealing with clients.
Normal hours of work: 35 Hours per week. The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements which are Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.
- Note: Required to be available for full 8 weeks of program starting :
Position #1: June 9th, 2026 – July 31st, 2026
Position #2: July 6th, 2026 – August 29th, 2026

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
- This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
- aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
- a valid Social Insurance Number;
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
- Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible
- An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.
Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements apply. Individuals who required employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible under this program. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of secondary school.
- Safe Food Handlers Certification is an asset.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification would be an asset.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum of three (3) months prior related experience working and/or volunteering in community-based programs, including experience working with multi-barriered persons.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
- Participate in orientation training.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $21.84 with a maximum of $26.20.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
