About the role
Data Scientist - Sensor Analytics (IoT & Signal Processing)
Calgary, AB
We're hiring a Data Scientist to help take an established, working data function to the next level as we scale our real-time industrial analytics platform. In this hands-on role, you will focus on turning raw, noisy sensor signals into actionable insights that help clients optimize their logistics, prevent theft, and operate with data-driven clarity.
You'll join a fast-growing, venture-backed startup based in Calgary. Working closely with an elite engineering team and reporting directly to the CTO, you will have real support to implement robust data standards and maintain end-to-end accountability for our core signal processing outcomes.
What You'll Do
Optimize Signal Processing: Own and improve our existing signal processing pipeline (built in Python and pandas with CI/CD), refining the smoothing, filtering, event detection, and predictive models that forecast tank levels. Scale Data Pipelines: Set and improve the standards for our data pipelines, managing the ingestion, transformation, and tagging of incoming real-time sensor streams as our network grows. Enhance Visualizations: Maintain and improve the internal dashboards and visualization tools that make sensor data highly legible for both our operational team and our customers. Champion Data Standards: Advocate for high-quality coding practices, robust data modeling, and consistent standards as we onboard more sensors, clients, and technical staff. Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work hand-in-hand with hardware, firmware, and core engineering teams to understand physical sensor behavior at the source.
What You'll Bring
Time-Series Expertise: Proven hands-on experience building, filtering, smoothing, and improving signal processing or anomaly detection algorithms on noisy, real-world sensor data. Core Technical Stack: Strong proficiency in Python and pandas, alongside fluent SQL skills for direct database interaction and structured data analysis. Mathematical Foundation: A solid, practical grounding in applied mathematics and statistics as they relate to time-series and sensor systems. Lifecycle Competency: Comfort working across the entire data lifecycle, including ingestion, transformation, tagging, analysis, and visualization. Ownership Mindset: A proactive attitude toward raising data quality standards rather than letting them slip during fast-paced development cycles. Local Presence: Ability to work on-site at our office in Calgary, AB.
Bonus Points
Experience designing and running production ETL pipelines using tools like Airflow, dbt, or similar. Experience with data lakes, cloud warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, S3), or cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure). Familiarity with BI and visualization platforms such as Metabase, Grafana, Tableau, Power BI, or Looker. Background working specifically with Lidar, Radar, or other time-of-flight/ranging sensor data. Experience handling IoT or industrial sensor data directly from field-deployed hardware.
Additional Details
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent Compensation: Competitive base salary commensurate with experience Benefits & Equity: Comprehensive benefits package plus equity Reporting Line: Reports directly to the CTO
This is an opportunity to shape how an entire industrial market utilizes IoT data - taking a well-built data function, solving complex physical signal challenges, and scaling a platform that has a measurable, real-world impact.
