About the role

Positions may be full-time or part-time, permanent or temporary. Shifts include days, afternoons and midnights.
Positions may come available at any of the long-term care homes that Niagara Region operates in Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Grimsby, or St. Catharines.
All part-time staff must declare a minimum of 32 hours per week and commit to working 24 hours per week if the work is available to you. Your availability shall include:

satisfactory completion of 2-Step TB (Tuberculosis) screening (or chest x-ray)

presenting educational qualifications
In order to be employed in our seniors division or any long term care facility, you must possess a current vulnerable sector police clearance that is less than 6 months old. Although it is at the candidate's discretion, it is encouraged that you obtain a vulnerable sector police clearance due to the length of process time.
A pplicants currently enrolled in an approved Food Service Worker certificate program are encouraged to apply. They will be considered for a FSW I position should there not be any fully qualified applicants in the file. FSW I applicants will be awarded the position under the FSW I pay grade, and afforded up to 3 years to become fully qualified as a condition of offer.
JOB SUMMARY
Provides resident-focused food service in the Long Term Care Home, including: preparation of resident meals and snacks; distribution and service of resident meals; receiving, storing and managing the inventory of resident food and food service supplies; daily cleaning and sanitizing of dishes, utensils and equipment used for resident meal preparation, delivery and service; operation of equipment; as well as other related duties as required for compliance and the efficient operation of the home. Works according to all applicable standards, acts and governing bodies.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, plus
- Successful completion of one of the following as per legislation/Act:
- Food Service Worker certificate program
- Assistant Cook, Cook, or Institutional Cook certification program
- Food & Nutrition Management diploma or degree
- Active membership of the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management
- Registered Dietitian; or,
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience as permitted by the applicable legislation/Act -A current Safe Food Handling Certificate as required by legislation/Act
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
- Up to 1 month of current related experience, preferably in a long term care geriatric setting -Knowledge of kitchen operating procedures, food storage and safekeeping -Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, legislation, regulations, guidelines and best practices applicable to the long-term care sector
- Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices
SKILLS
- Demonstrated commitment and ability to provide resident-centered support with integrity, dedication, compassion, and respect
- Strong listening, communication, teamwork and relationship-building skills
- Willingness to participate in ongoing learning, development and training (formal and informal) -Ability to read menus -Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate in English -Ability to follow oral and written instructions -High standards of cleanliness and organization -Strong attention to detail -Time management skills in order to meet demanding schedules
- Competent working with digital/electronic technology; including electronic tablets, computers/laptops, food service-related software (i.e.Tray Card), and Microsoft Office products i.e. Outlook, Excel, web browsers, etc. -Must be able to exercise judgement and initiative
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
- Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
- Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
- Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job
- Must have a good attendance record
- Must be able to work shift work, including days, afternoons, evenings and weekends
