About the role

(Permanent) Victoria, BC Expected Salary: $86,879 to $106,185

In determining the final salary, Babcock will consider a variety of factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and be presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide professional engineering direction and oversight within the waterfront Naval Architecture team for the analysis and repair of submarine steel structures and hull systems;
  • Review paint or structural surveys, non-destructive inspection reports and technical queries and provide technical responses, engineering reports, repair specifications, or requests for repair deviations or waivers;
  • Produce and certify repair specifications, including structural calculations and technical drawing packs, for submarine repair requirements;
  • Generate or review structural work packages and contract documentation for submarine maintenance periods;
  • Provide engineering direction and support to the build-up and testing of submarine hull and structural systems;
  • Participate in hazard identification and risk assessments for submarine structural systems;
  • Technically manage a small team of 2-3 junior engineers or technicians and provide engineering mentorship for issues related to structural analysis, material selection, repair requirements, etc.;
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders including project management, quality assurance and supply chain teams;
  • Interface with external contractors and customers including Seaspan’s submarine production workforce and the Department of National Defence’s design and system authorities and on-site management team; and,
  • Other duties as required.

The ideal candidate brings:

  • An engineering degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution;
  • Certification as a Professional Engineer (PEng) with the applicable provincial association;
  • 8+ years of structural or marine engineering experience;
  • Experience in stability and docking in a Professional Engineer capacity is highly preferred;
  • A comprehensive understanding of marine structures and their design or maintenance requirements;
  • A demonstrated capability to oversee the development of complex technical solutions for the repair of steel structures;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including writing formal reports, and making presentations;
  • You are eligible for a Canadian Secret Security and ITAR Clearance
