What you'll do
BC Hydro has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Security and Investigation Advisor to join our team and assist
with the delivery of the enterprise-wide physical security program, consisting of such things as risk and vulnerability
assessments, security operations, compliance, investigations, and security systems. The role will focus on supporting the
North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL) project. The role resides in the Security and Emergency Management team
reporting to the Security Services Manager. Fundamentally, this role assists in coordinating the physical security risk for BC
Hydro by providing risk-based security solutions and controls that not only protect our facilities, people, and operations, but
also North America’s Bulk Electric System.
This dynamic role monitors, directs, and reports on all aspects of BC Hydro’s physical security operations including planning
and response, compliance, systems, investigations, and policy / procedure adherence.
As the Security and Investigations Advisor for the northern region, you will work closely with others on the team to monitor
and report on evolving security risks and adjust security plans and operations accordingly. You will conduct sensitive and
confidential security and compliance-based investigations. The position will establish strong working relationships with
internal business units, at all levels of the organization, with contractors, and with external law enforcement, intelligence,
and partner agencies.
Familiarity with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection standards is an
asset. The role requires strong communication skills to be a change agent for and promote a culture of good security and
compliance.
Summary of the Role:
The Security and Investigation Advisor will administer, implement, and maintain security programs, processes and
procedures that reduce physical security risk, ensure Mandatory Reliability Standard compliance, and limit liability and
exposure to impacts to our people, assets and operations, finances, and reputation. Candidates should demonstrate
effective collaboration and leadership abilities to achieve objectives. The position involves elements of BC Hydro’s
enterprise physical security plan including, but not limited to risk management, security operations including alarm
monitoring and response, physical access management, compliance, working with contract security, first nations partners
and investigations. The role will be forward-thinking recommending improvement opportunities wherever possible - strong
business and relationship acumen is an asset.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Your overall goal is to provide security-related expertise and strategic thinking to safeguard BC Hydro and to support the
North Coast Transmission Line project. North Coast electrification and economic development. You will also be responsible
to be familiar with BC Hydro’s security standards and programs, relevant operating procedures, and NERC Critical
Infrastructure Protection compliance requirements. You will be accountable for delivery of day-to-day security which
includes such things as physical access control, alarm monitoring and response, investigations, incident response, and
security guard management. You will support development of security plans, and where appropriate bring new ideas or
creative solutions to improve security posture, reduce operating expenses and/or create more efficiencies.
The role also:
- Conducts investigations of a highly confidential nature involving employees and/or contractors in relation to high profile
physical and employee security incidents.
- Responds to high profile physical and employee security incidents, as required
- May direct and conduct security surveys and ensure adherence to standard procedures
- Ensures the protection of security sensitive information and plans and, where thefts are confirmed, provides evidence to
support criminal complaints and civil litigation.
- Responds to high profile physical and employee security incidents, as required.
- Develops, writes, and recommends standards, methodologies, procedures, and guidelines for minimizing security risk.
- Support emergency planning and response.
- Builds and maintains relationships within BC Hydro in areas such as Human Resources, Employee Relations, Field
Operations, etc.
- Builds and maintains relationships with law enforcement and safety officials across BC.
- Creates, implements, and manages security investigations and operations.
- Provides consulting services to management on a variety of theft issues and problems.
- May also direct and conduct security surveys and ensure adherence to compliance standards.
- Liaison with strategic private security contractors.
What you bring
The successful candidate shall have a minimum of 10 years of operational experience in Security, Policing, and/or Public
Emergency Services.
- Post-secondary education of any discipline would be considered a strong asset.
- Well-developed interpersonal, communication, writing and presentation skills are important for this role.
- Strong relationship management as well as proven ability to effectively collaborate with and influence stakeholders, both
internal and external.
- Well established relationships within law enforcement.
- Knowledge and experience in protection of critical infrastructure assets.
- Experience in designing and implementing security operations and field investigations.
- Proven ability to work autonomously with little direction and be an effective member of a team, working in a fast- paced
environment.
- Be able to obtain, Government of Canada Security Clearance
- Already have or are working on attaining a Security Management Certificate or Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or
Physical Security Professional (PSP) designations. Please submit your application if you will be on track to receive such
certifications within 12 months of being hired.

What else you should know
- Candidates will reside in or close to Prince George.
- Work base is in Prince George and the northern region but, overnight travel will be required throughout the province of
British Columbia, but primarily the northern region.
- Unless determined otherwise by Security Operations, the successful candidate will work a 5 day on 2 days off schedule
that may involve weekend and evening shifts including overtime.
- Please note a condition of employment is that a valid Class 5 Driver's license is held and maintained in good standing.
- This role is a security sensitive position, and the successful applicant will be required to be eligible for reliability status
level security clearance.
- Please be advised that this role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will
be required as a pre-condition to employment.
