About the Role:

As Director, Corporate Planning, you will be at the heart of shaping Algonquin Colleges financial future. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this pivotal role offers the opportunity to lead the development of the Colleges operating and capital budgets, drive strategic financial planning, and influence decisions that affect the entire institution. You’ll collaborate with senior leadership to align financial resources with the Colleges strategic and business plans, ensuring long-term sustainability and fiscal integrity.

This role is ideal for a visionary financial leader who thrives in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. You’ll leverage enrolment forecasting, scenario modeling, and integrated financial systems to guide revenue planning and support key initiatives across academic programs, applied research, and capital investments. Your expertise will directly inform decisions made by the Board of Governors and the Executive Team, making your contributions essential to the College’s success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Planning and Forecasting

    • Lead the development of operational and capital financial plans aligned with the College’s Strategic Plan and long-term sustainability goals;
    • Coordinate intermediate and long-range financial modeling and scenario planning to assess risks and ensure flexibility in projections;
    • Conduct research and analysis to evaluate new projects and initiatives, identifying financial and institutional impacts and recommending actions;
    • Monitor financial performance of operations and capital projects, oversee variance analysis, and guide quarterly revenue and expenditure updates;
    • Stay current with updates from the Board of Governors, Executive Team, Budget Committee, and Ministry to ensure financial plans reflect evolving priorities and requirements.
  • Budget Administration

    • Collaborate with the CFO to develop annual operational and capital budget targets and oversee Finance department budget preparation;
    • Establish revenue and expenditure assumptions for the annual budget and five-year pro forma for Executive Team approval;
    • Maintain the College’s five-year Capital Investment Plan to support strategic and business planning;
    • Lead the preparation of all financial components of the annual budget, including instructions and templates;
    • Advise leadership on budget matters, review departmental requests, and recommend allocation changes to the CFO;
    • Support position planning in coordination with HR to align with strategic workforce goals;
    • Provide budget guidance and analytical support to managers and stakeholders across the College;
    • Coordinate production of the Budget Book and related materials for Board approval and community communication;
    • Develop and maintain effective budgeting systems and models aligned with best practices and external funding frameworks;
    • Review and propose changes to budget model (such as Responsibility Centre Management (RCM)) allocations to ensure relevance and accuracy across academic and service areas.
  • Budget, Models, and Planning Systems

    • Oversee budgeting and financial planning systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness across College operations;
    • Analyze and enhance budgeting methods, tools, and procedures to support strategic financial decision-making;
    • Develop and maintain forecasting and scenario models to accurately project financial outcomes;
    • Advance modeling tools to support medium- and long-term financial planning and sustainability.
  • Collaboration and Support

    • Maintain contacts and build strong working relationships within the College, with Ministry officials, and senior finance officers at other colleges;
    • Support the Chief Financial Officer at meetings of the Audit and Risk Management Committee, and the Algonquin College Executive Team through attendance at meetings and by presenting budget related topics as required;
    • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4) year bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
  • A Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation is required;
  • Education, training or coaching in lean management principles is required;
  • Master’s degree in business administration would be considered an asset;
  • Minimum nine (9) years of experience of senior level experience including responsibility for annual budget development, preparation of Quarterly Financial Forecasts and other budget and scenario planning models;
  • Demonstrated experience operating in an environment following the Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards for Government Not-for-Profit Organizations (PSAS);
  • Demonstrated strategic planning experience;
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading the operating and capital budget development process for a large institution;
  • Demonstrated expertise in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, including design, implementation, and maintenance;
  • The incumbent must have strong leadership and organizational skills to lead a team with a large number of deadlines and deliverables;
  • Strong communication skills to enable effective presentations of complex financial, statistical and other information to be made to the Board of Governors, Algonquin College Executive Team, and meetings of College managers and staff. In addition, there is an ongoing requirement for producing reports, analyses, letters, and memorandums which require excellent writing skills;
  • Demonstrated experience/expertise operating in an Enterprise Resource Planning system;
