The York Region District School Board is seeking a highly experienced and qualified professional to assume a leadership role overseeing the daily operations and personnel within the Maintenance Centre, overseeing the Landscaping Department and the Warehouse & Courier Services Department. The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated supervisory experience, exceptional organizational capabilities, and in-depth knowledge of grounds and field maintenance practices. Proficiency in the operation of heavy equipment and specialized landscaping tools—including chippers, stumpers, and chainsaws—is required, as is familiarity with a variety of tree species. A thorough understanding of Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) requirements is also essential to ensure regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.

In compliance with Board policies and procedures, responsible for the direct supervision of the Maintenance Services staff and the monitoring of contractors required to maintain Board facilities in a safe and efficient operational condition.
Major Responsibilities
- To supervise the assignment of work to internal maintenance staff and external contractors performing maintenance work. Ensuring the applicable regulations, codes and contracts are followed.
- To receive, respond and dispatch emergency calls received from Board personnel and ensure Senior Management is aware of emergency situations.
- To manage fleet of Board vehicles including licensing, CVOR requirements, cleaning, daily inspections, preventative maintenance, Board graphics, and driver infractions.
- To provide courier services for regular mail services as well as special program supply to all sites. This includes supporting movement of large equipment across sites.
- To manage all Petro Canada Fuel cards, eBase assets, eBase work orders, eBase logs, eBase inventory, maintenance centre web tool, WFMS and GeoTab for vehicle tracking system.
- To monitor purchase order availability and invoicing to ensure accuracy and fair division of purchases among suppliers/service contractors.
- To provide staffing and supply support for new programs and assist with the development and task requirements (i.e., gender free washroom access, safe schools, bottle filling stations, tree planting etc.)
- To assist in the review and input into new school specifications and board standards documents for equipment and materials.
- To visit school sites in order to determine priority and assignments of maintenance or requests for maintenance repairs.
- To perform on-site inspections to ensure work is completed by contractors according to contract specifications.
- To participate with Purchasing Services in the evaluation and selection of contract services.
- To provide technical assistance for operational issues to Principals, Supervisor of Facilities Services and Caretakers. This includes heating, plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, locksmithing and landscaping.
- To participate with Purchasing Services in the research, evaluation, and selection of shop equipment and machinery, vehicles, and supplies.
- To maintain shop inventories of spare parts and materials.
- To support the school Co-Op programs for safe tool use and building processes and participate in the Co-Op student and staff selection process, training, and employee performance appraisals.
- To provide quantitative and qualitative data for annual budget estimates and attend meetings as requested.
- To manage and coordinate the Board’s work order system for general and emergency repair requests for all Board facilities and sites.
- To assist in the administration of the agreement with CUPE Local 1196.
- To perform other duties as assigned.
Education Experience And Qualifications
- Two years of post-secondary education in engineering or a related technical discipline is required.
- Minimum five years in construction, facility management or related experience is required.
- Effective oral, written, listening, interpersonal skills, computer skills are required.
- Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and groups both within and outside the Board is required.
- Requires a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have access to transportation.
LEADERSHIP
- Directly supervises Carpenters, Painters, Welders, Locksmiths, Cabinetmakers, Electricians, Plumbers, CCTV Technicians, Fire alarm technician, Mechanical and HVAC technicians, Landscapers, Groundskeepers, Indoor Equipment Technician, Truck Drivers and Couriers.
- Establishes and cultivates strong department values, builds cross-team collaboration, resolves escalated people issues, and provides training support to all staff.
- Ensures employees have the appropriate resources and tools to accomplish department goals.
- Provides scope of work to contractors and employees as needed and monitor for efficient practices, safe work habits, and quality of work.
- Collaborates with multiple departments and system partners for research on efficient, cost effective, and safe approaches to resolve unique repair and replacement issues.
- Communicates with service providers for individualized quotes for maintenance centre repairs and review quotes submitted, approve/deny quotes, and follow up on quoted work.
- Liaises with local authorities, including TSSA, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Transport, Department of Health, Municipal Building and Plumbing Inspectors, Electrical Safety Authority, Township by law officers, and Board's Insurers.
ACCOUNTABILITY AND DECISION MAKING
- Responsible for maintaining knowledge of and adherence to Board policies and procedures, collective agreements, and related legislation and regulations including the Health & Safety Act and WHMIS.
- Responds to emergency situations across the region and provides direction and support.
- Provides input and direction in Board policies and procedures as well as Plant Services Standard Operating Practices and Guidelines that are related to the Maintenance Centre's services.
- Ensures all Board assets including facilities, grounds, vacant sites, fleet vehicles, maintenance equipment and tools are in safe and operable order for all users.
