YOUR ROLE As a Lab Operations Senior Engineer (LabOps SE) on our team, you’ll provide internal support for Wind River’s engineering, development, sales, and support teams. We manage reliable labs, cloud environments, networks, systems, remote access, and embedded devices that enable engineering and test teams to develop and test software globally, ensuring 24/7 accessibility.
This Ottawa-based position focuses primarily on building, supporting, and managing cloud lab environments, with some additional responsibilities involving Linux, VxWorks, Helix Hypervisor, servers, and embedded systems. Typical tasks include setup and configuration of servers and networking (racking, cabling, iDRAC/BMC/iLO/firmware/BIOS updates), inventory management through NetBox and other tools as well as network diagramming of systems and connections.
The role also involves managing remote access for engineering teams and configuring network boot environments. While the focus is on Ottawa cloud labs, occasional support for our other global sites is expected.
Success in this position requires strong debugging skills, dexterity, creativity, collaboration, and a continual drive to learn and improve. The work can be physically active—you should be comfortable unboxing, lifting, and installing servers and lab infrastructure as required.
In your daily job you will:
- Build and maintain cloud lab environments per engineering requirements.
- Design, build, and document network configurations (L2/L3, IPv4/IPv6) for cloud and embedded labs using Ethernet, DAC, and fiber connections.
- Configure and debug GPS and PTP systems.
- Set up and maintain servers through iDRAC, BMC, iLO, and related interfaces; manage firmware, BIOS, remote consoles, and SOL connections.
- Connect and document all network interfaces and other cabling.
- Follow safety practices when working with ladders, pallets, and heavy systems (ask for help when necessary).
- Add and maintain detailed hardware and connectivity inventory in NetBox and other lab tools.
- Update and manage IPv4 and IPv6 DNS records for infrastructure and devices.
- Provide excellent customer support and assistance for all lab users.
- Occasionally install and support embedded targets, managing firmware and BIOS updates; handle static-sensitive devices with care. Enable remote access via serial console or KVM. Support devices with BIOS, U-Boot, VxWorks boot loaders (Some labs require restricted security clearances, with strict access, data protection and citizenship requirements.)
- Configure Redfish, LLDP, VXLAN, and port-channels as required.
- Demonstrate strong Linux command-line skills and familiarity with standard CLI tools.
- Track tasks using Jira and GitLab.
How You Will Contribute Key skills and competencies for succeeding in this role are:
- Computer Science, Computer Networking, Lab Management, Electrical Engineering, or IT degree/diploma
- Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership, commitment, and quality.
- 5+ years of relevant experience with computers, networking, lab infrastructure, racks and embedded systems.
- Strong networking background with L2 and L3 protocols, VXLAN, PTP, to configure and support Ethernet networks.
- Ability to build and support RF and GPS cabling.
- Ability to debug issues with a multimeter (DMM) or oscilloscope.
- Work carefully with delicate and ESD-sensitive devices and electronics.
- Have broad exposure to hardware, firmware, and networking technologies.
- Experience with electronics, network interfaces, embedded systems, desktop computers, and server hardware.
- Comfortable researching technical information independently.
- Motivation to find solutions but know when to collaborate and seek input.
- Physically capable of unboxing, installing, and maintaining lab equipment.
- Safety-conscious and use good computer security practices.
- Proficient in creating clear network diagrams and configuration documentation.
- Mechanically inclined, with experience using hand tools and test equipment.
- Familiarity with Confluence, NetBox, Jira, GitLab, SharePoint, Visio, and Dell networking.
- Passionate about technology and continuous learning, fostering knowledge sharing within the team.
- Have a positive attitude, be eager to share findings and work well with others.
