About the role

Reporting to the Senior Corporate Officer, Communications & Marketing, the Senior Advisor, Media Relations and Public Engagement provides strategic leadership in media relations, issues management, crisis communications and public engagement for Covenant. This role serves as the organization’s primary advisor on media relations and public positioning, leading both proactive and reactive engagement with media at the local, provincial and national levels. The Senior Advisor works closely with senior leaders and executive teams, providing high-level strategic counsel on emerging issues, reputational risk, public policy considerations and opportunities to strengthen Covenant’s public voice. The position is responsible for developing and executing media strategies, managing media inquiries and high-profile issues, and preparing leaders for media interactions, public appearances and stakeholder engagement. This includes leading the development of key messages, statements and communication approaches in complex and time-sensitive situations. The Senior Advisor also leads corporate issues management and crisis communications, providing rapid-response support and ensuring coordinated, aligned messaging with internal and external partners, including government and health system stakeholders. The role monitors the media landscape, identifies emerging risks and opportunities, and supports proactive public engagement strategies that build trust, enhance reputation and strengthen Covenant’s role within the broader healthcare system. NOTE: This position is based in Edmonton and requires regular in-office presence. Eligibility for a hybrid work arrangement (3 days in office) may be considered upon successful completion of probation. This position is non-unionized.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, arts, social sciences, public relations, communications or marketing, along with 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in media relations, public affairs, issues management or crisis communications within a complex organization. Demonstrated experience working directly with senior executives in high-risk or high-profile environments, along with experience leading public engagement initiatives or campaigns. Equivalencies in education and experience may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in media relations, issues management and crisis communications, along with a strong understanding of the Alberta and national media landscape. They demonstrate the ability to provide strategic counsel in complex, high-pressure and politically sensitive environments, supported by strong risk assessment, judgment and decision-making skills. The candidate has experience developing and executing proactive media strategies that strengthen organizational positioning and reputation, and brings a solid understanding of public policy, government relations and health system dynamics. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential, including the ability to craft clear, compelling messaging across a variety of formats such as key messages, speaking notes and issue briefs. They demonstrate a strong ability to influence and advise senior leadership, build and maintain relationships across media, government and stakeholder environments, and manage confidential or sensitive information with a high degree of discretion. The successful candidate is highly adaptable, strategic and composed, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and respond effectively in fast-paced and evolving situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

A professional designation such as CPRS or IABC.
