About the role

Miru, a fast-moving clean tech startup developing breakthrough technologies is seeking a motivated Process Development Engineer / Scientist to join our Process Development team. This is a hands-on role focused on scaling fabrication processes from R&D to production helping to transform innovative lab-scale methods into reliable, high-quality manufacturing steps.

You’ll work on a broad range of engineering tasks, including process optimization, equipment design support, data analysis, and documentation. By collaborating closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, you’ll help refine downstream processes, improve yield and device performance, and support the handoff of new processes to production.

The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical intuition, attention to detail, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset. This is a unique opportunity to grow your technical skillset across both R&D and manufacturing, while contributing to the foundation of a high-impact technology platform.

What You Will Do:

Process Development & Optimization for Device Fabrication:

  • Lead effort with smaller projects such as turning lab methods into stable, capable, documented processes, designing experiments, instrumenting equipment, building SPC, and driving yield and performance improvements.
  • Drive process development projects from concept through implementation with limited oversight to ensure predictable chemical transformations and consistent electro-optical device performance..
  • Apply design of experiments and contribute to improving quality control methods, and process data pipelines to support capability analysis.
  • Contribute to the design, test, and refinement of equipment, fixtures, and processes to improve performance, yield, and reliability.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and recommend improvements.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and scientists to develop SOPs, work instructions, and process documentation.
  • Support the transition of new processes into production, including training and handoff to operations.

Equipment Design & Modification:

  • Contribute to optimizing equipment settings and hardware configurations to achieve uniform, performant coatings, while ensuring robust repeatability and high yield.

Safety, Quality, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement:

  • Contribute to the establishment and refinement of quality control measures, ensuring that device-level performance metrics are consistently met.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., SPC, DoE) by using process and electro-optical data to identify trends, reduce variability, and improve device yield and reliability.
  • Contribute to a safe and productive work environment through rigorous application of process hazard reviews and compliance with safety requirements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with development scientists, device engineers, process technicians, and data specialists to ensure that process parameters, equipment specifications, and data infrastructures align with project goals and evolving product requirements.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly, enabling informed decision-making and rapid iteration of device fabrication processes.

What you Bring:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years experience working with substrate-based manufacturing processes (e.g., thin film deposition, coatings, roll-to-roll processing, or semiconductor fabrication) preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with process equipment design, installation, and modification, preferably for device fabrication or similar high-precision processes.
  • Proven DOE execution and analysis (JMP/Minitab/Python/Matlab) and SPC/MSA practice.

Problem Solving & Communication:

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, particularly in complex, multidisciplinary manufacturing contexts.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated ability to design, build, or troubleshoot equipment.
  • Self-starter who can work independently, prioritize tasks, and deliver results with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to present complex technical findings to diverse audiences.

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience with custom instrument design and integration into production lines.
  • Familiarity with advanced materials and device physics principles relevant to electro-optical properties.
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for data analysis, automation, or integration with external databases.

Work Schedule and Compensation:

  • Ability to work full-time on-site at our Olympic Village facility.
  • Ability to occasionally travel internationally for work assignments
