As an Automation Specialist in our Calgary office, you'll be at the heart of innovative projects that push the boundaries of technology. You'll collaborate with a dynamic project team, applying your expertise in control system design and implementation to create cutting-edge solutions.
In this role, you'll dive into various facets of automation, from configuration and process control to system testing, commissioning, and start-up activities. You'll also have the opportunity to integrate and optimize new and existing solutions using primary technologies like Schneider, AVEVA, and Rockwell Automation process solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Participation and engagement in all phases of control system lifecycle, from front-end engineering and functional specification development through detailed design, procurement, configuration, implementation, startup, and commissioning in areas such as DCS Configuration, SCADA, HMI, PLC programming, system architecture and networking design.
- Developing and design of all required project documentation with high level of attention to detail.
- Design and developing of code for automation equipment (DCS, PLCs, HMIs) and integration/interfacing with third party products (OPC clients, Historians, etc.) aligning with functional requirements and Convergix's internal programming standards.
- Conduct hardware setup and checks, internal functional verification testing, software acceptance test (SwAT) with customer and execute site acceptance test (SAT) at customer’s location.
- Field activities such as IO loop checks, functional testing of the equipment, verification of cause-and-effect diagrams, testing of third-party interfaces and support of integration with enterprise/business systems.
- Attend and coordinate meetings with internal and external stakeholders providing technical feedback with excellent communication skills and ability to express complex ideas effectively.
- Responsible for and takes ownership for project success delivering target quality and cost management by providing project status updates, forecasting, and issues/risks to the Project Manager or Technical Lead proactively, while proposing plans to ensure successful projects.
- Strong client-focused approach, dedicated to providing exceptional client experiences to our internal and external customers.
- Travel as required for various field commitments.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- 2-5 years of automation programming, control system configuration and commissioning experience with Rockwell / Schneider software and hardware.
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical, Instrumentation or Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science/Systems.
- Proficiency with development, reading and understanding of engineering input documents (control narratives, piping and instrumentation diagrams, shutdown keys, electrical schematics, single line diagrams, etc.).
- Strong proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Teams, Access).
- Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and prioritize work in a timely manner; capable of multi-tasking and working under tight deadlines.
- Network configuration (layer 2 or layer 3) experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience with other PLC/PAC and accompanying software such as Siemens TIA Portal.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, clients, vendors and work effectively within team environment.
- Reliable transportation and an ability to travel; Automation Specialists should have the ability to travel within the US and Canada.
Desirable
- Priority will be given to candidates with Oil and Gas, Petrochemical, Mining, Pulp and Paper, LNG or Pharmaceutical experience.
- Visualization configuration experience (HMI / SCADA / DCS) is an asset.
- Familiarity with common industrial networking protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, OPC, Cisco IOS, HART protocol.
- Experience with the following programming languages is an asset: VBA, SQL, JAVA script, Python.
- Eligible to register with APEGA/ASET as a P.Eng., P.L. or P. Tech.
