Role Overview
The Senior Data Solutions Architect - Azure is responsible for leading the design, governance, and delivery of complex, multi-workload data analytics programs on Microsoft Azure. This individual acts as the primary architectural authority supporting customers through modern data strategy, Lakehouse design, data governance, and platform modernization. The role requires deep cross-domain knowledge of the modern data stack, specifically Azure Fabric, Databricks, and Microsoft Purview, and the ability to navigate both technical data engineering and executive-level data strategy conversations.
Minimum Qualifications
-
10+ years in data/cloud architecture, enterprise information architecture, or senior data engineering/BI roles.
-
7+ years hands-on Azure Data experience, including data lake design, pipeline orchestration, data modeling, and complex migration.
-
Proven experience leading multi-workload, enterprise-scale data transformation or migration programs
-
Good understanding of Databricks, including Delta Lake architecture, Spark optimization, Unity Catalog, and structured streaming.
-
Demonstrated expertise in Azure Fabric/AWS Lake Formation + Glue, including OneLake design, capacity management, and the unification of Data Engineering/Data Science workloads.
-
Strong background in Data Governance implementation using Microsoft Purview (cataloging, lineage, sensitivity labeling, and policy enforcement) is
a big Advantage. -
Experience with modern data engineering patterns (Medallion Architecture, Data Mesh/Fabric concepts, CI/CD for Data, Python/PySpark, SQL).

Prior consulting, professional services, or customer-facing data architecture experience required.

Strong communication, stakeholder management, and executive presentation skills.
-
Certifications strongly preferred: DP-203 (Data Engineering), DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer), AZ-305 (Solution Architect), Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional.
Key Responsibilities
1. Data Architecture & Design
-
Lead enterprise-level data architecture across Azure Fabric/Synapse, Databricks.
-
Author and validate HLDs, LLDs, data models (Star/Snowflake), and architectural artifacts for Lakehouse solutions.
-
Define target state architectures aligned to modern best practices (Medallion Architecture, Data Mesh, Zero Trust for Data).
2. Program Delivery Leadership
-
Provide architectural oversight for large-scale data modernization projects (e.g., migrating legacy SQL/Synapse/Hadoop to Fabric or Databricks).
-
Ensure technical integrity, performance optimization, and alignment with enterprise data patterns.
-
Guide data engineering teams, provide mentorship, perform code/design reviews, and support technical escalations.
3. Data Governance & Security (Purview)
-
Define data security baselines, RBAC models (Unity Catalog/Fabric capabilities), row-level security, and encryption standards.
-
Lead the implementation of Microsoft Purview for Fabric to govern data assets across hybrid and multi-cloud landscapes.
-
Ensure adherence to regulatory compliance (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA) via automated scanning, classification, and lineage tracking.
4. Customer Engagement & Advisory
-
Drive architectural decision-making, trade-off discussions (e.g., Import vs. Direct Lake, Spark vs. T-SQL), and roadmap alignment.
-
Support presales at SME capacity: estimation, solutioning, and SOW definition for new data engagements.
5. Delivery Excellence & Coaching
-
Provide end-to-end technical leadership throughout the data program lifecycle.
-
Mentor and upskill engineers and jr. architects on the transition to Azure Fabric and Databricks best practices.
-
Contribute to internal accelerators, frameworks, and reusable data processing templates.
Ideal Candidate Background
-
Has led at least 3–5 end-to-end enterprise data programs, ideally in regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, energy, public sector).
-
Comes from a consulting, professional services, or systems integrator background (e.g., large SI, large boutique data partner) - e.g., Slalom, Avanade, Capgemini.
-
Comfortable supporting strategy-to-execution with diverse stakeholder groups (CDOs, Data Stewards, App teams).
-
Strong understanding of FinOps for data (managing Databricks DBUs/Fabric Capacities) and cloud operating models.
-
Can navigate ambiguity and drive clarity through architectural direction and decision frameworks.
