##The Opportunity
The Physical Facilities Department oversees the planning, maintenance, and development of Banff Centre’s infrastructure. Responsibilities include managing the organization's physical assets and providing timely, efficient services to a wide range of users, including staff, faculty, guests, artists, and the broader community.
This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing staff in the trades and ground maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all infrastructure including buildings, architectural elements, roads, parking lots, snow removal and landscaping. The Manager ensures a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible work environment while delivering timely, high-quality service to the Banff Centre community. This position emphasizes strong leadership, proactive problem-solving, and a commitment to exceptional customer service and workmanship standards.
The Manager, Facilities Maintenance oversees daily operations of the physical grounds on campus. Providing guidance to a team of carpenters, painters, groundskeepers and locksmith, this role involves coordinating staff to maintain the campus. This is a key position that helps ensure prompt responses to the needs of the Banff Centre community, and promotes strong customer service and high-quality workmanship.
##Roles and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Director, Physical Facilities, key accountabilities include:
Facilities Maintenance
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and operation of all facilities, including buildings, grounds, roads, parking lots, and site infrastructure.
- Coordinate routine repairs and preventative maintenance programs, including scheduled inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
- Assist the Executive and Associate Directors in capital expenditure and planning.
- Monitor the quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of maintenance and repairs.
- Manage specialized service agreements, including vehicle leases, roof anchors, pest control, laundry, waste removal and elevator service agreements with 2 elevator service providers.
- Manage logistical support to accomplish trade-related work and ensure timely delivery of materials and products for seasonal tasks.
- Troubleshoot emergency repairs and maintenance; maintain an after-hours callback system to provide emergency coverage.
- Prepare specialized tools, machinery, and equipment for seasonal or special tasks, and coordinate major equipment repair or replacement.
Employee Supervision and Leadership
- Supervise all trades personnel, including carpentry, painting, locks/inventory, and grounds staff.
- Recruit, hire, mentor, and evaluate staff, assign work and provide ongoing formal and informal feedback, coaching, and support.
- Develop and implement work policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Train staff in the safe and efficient operation of tools, machinery, and equipment, and provide clear direction and oversight.
- Maintain a high-performing, collaborative, and inclusive team culture, aligned with Banff Centre values.
- Recruit, coach and lead team members, providing ongoing performance management and progressive discipline, when necessary, up to and including termination.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Serve as the Health and Safety representative for Physical Facilities on the Banff Centre Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Implement, monitor, and maintain departmental health and safety initiatives, including WHMIS, standing operating procedures, and injury reduction programs.
- Ensure all personnel have access to proper protective equipment and are trained in its use; conduct regular safety meetings.
- Maintain and purchase all necessary health and safety supplies for the department.
Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives
- Ensure all work is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner, using proven products, technologies, and best management practices.
- Manage the recycling depot infrastructure and coordinate recycling initiatives with the Town of Banff. Oversee the Town of Banff’s waste removal from campus including organizing extra pickups as required.
- Liaise with the Town of Banff and Parks Canada on matters including street maintenance, waste removal, snow clearing, site development and underground utility repairs.
- Act as a liaison with the Canadian Parks Service regarding wildlife and vegetation management and environmental impact assessments.
- Implement and monitor environmental initiatives for the department in collaboration with the Associate Director, Physical Facilities and the Environmental Committee.
- Coordinate and prioritize on site equipment repairs.
Human Resources, Team Building and Interdivisional Cooperation
- Foster an internal culture that maintains the highest standards for customer service, excellence of staff, participant and guest experience, and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity.
- Ensure a positive and safe work environment for all Banff employees, aligned with Banff Centre’s policies including but not limited to code of ethics, anti-harassment policies, contractual obligations, and strategic directions.
- Maintain effective working relationships with team members, internal partners, customers, the union and other stakeholders.
- Enable Physical Facilities team to function as a high performing team at all times, maintaining open communication, clear objectives and priorities, and a culture of positive behavioral intent that is consistent and in alignment with Banff Centre values and is welcoming and inclusive, supporting a diverse workforce.
- Recruit, hire, and mentor staff, assigning work, and measuring their performance in relation to the strategic standards of excellence and goals. Works closely with the Human Resources Team to ensure policies, procedures, contractual, legislative and work culture expectations are met.
- Ensure that employees fully understand their roles, responsibilities, and performance standards and provide ongoing formal and informal feedback, coaching and support as employees strive to achieve expectations.
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access
- Support the development and implementation of strategies to promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and access across Banff Centre.
- Support team members participating in training sessions to educate on unconscious bias, cultural competency, and other diversity-related development processes.
- Conduct and support assessments of workplace accessibility for employees, participants and guests with disabilities and determine and implement improvements as required.
- Ensure work environment is welcoming and progressive for members of diverse and Indigenous Communities.
##Qualifications and Educational Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management/supervisory role overseeing buildings and grounds maintenance
- Team leader with proven ability to supervise, train and motivate staff
- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- The ability to solve problems and meet deadlines under pressure
- Proficiency in Windows based software applications including word processing, spreadsheet and database software
- Experience in a unionized environment will be considered as asset
- Project management experience strongly desired
- Budget experience preferred
##Employment Terms and****Benefits
- In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, full-time position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
- The salary range for this position is $68,714 to $102,040 based on experience.
