Maintains a variety of pieces of equipment in the BMLSc program and on occasion equipment items in the Cote and Quandt laboratories. The main equipment items to maintain are:

  • Maintain and fix the sterilizer (autoclave) that includes but is not limited to the legislated requirements to maintain a pressure vessel. The maintenance will include checking the safety valves; hand adjusted valves and that the sight glass is appropriately sealed.
  • Maintain the bottle tumbler, and heating block.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Not maintaining or incorrectly maintaining an autoclave can result in serious consequences, including ineffective sterilization which allows bacteria, viruses and spores to survive, increasing the risk of infection transmission; possibility of the equipment malfunctioning which may lead to burns, leaks or dangerous pressure build ups; and not meeting required regulations for the maintenance of a sterilizer (autoclave).

Incorrectly maintaining other laboratory equipment may lead to either the malfunction of the equipment or equipment that provides errors in its measurement and assessment.

Supervision Received
This position receives direction from the Director of BMLSc and senior technicians in the BMLSc program and on occasion the senior lab staff in the Cote and Quandt labs. However, the individual is expected to work autonomously in determining how to fix the equipment.
