The hEDS*omics study is a pioneering, multi-center research initiative that aims to transform our understanding of Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). To achieve its ambitious goals, we're seeking a talented Machine Learning Engineer with expertise in healthcare data analysis, medical terminology, and cutting-edge machine learning techniques.

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and implementing innovative machine learning models and algorithms to drive insights from the hEDS*omics multimodal dataset, encompassing clinical, environmental, and multi-omics data. This role will be instrumental in identifying disease subtypes and biomarkers for hEDS, advancing our understanding of this complex condition.

This position is part of a collaborative effort between McGill University's Canada Excellence Research Chair in Genomic Medicine, four specialized EDS clinics, the Québec Coalition of Orphan Diseases, and Medeloop, our AI healthcare technology partner. You'll work closely with Medeloop's data science, engineering, and product teams to ensure that our machine learning solutions meet the project's needs and objectives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain machine learning models, algorithms, tools, and agents for analyzing biomedical data.
  • Collaborate with data engineers to build scalable data pipelines for model training and inference.
  • Work with Medeloop product and data science teams to understand project requirements and translate them into machine learning solutions.
  • Ensure machine learning models' performance, accuracy, and reliability through continuous evaluation and improvement.
  • Implement best practices for model versioning, testing, and deployment.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis and feature engineering to extract meaningful insights from diverse datasets.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for machine learning models and processes.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in machine learning and healthcare technology to enhance our solutions continually.

Qualifying Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience as a machine learning engineer, preferably in the healthcare industry.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Scala.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, statistical models, and deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience with cloud platforms and services, particularly AWS (e.g., SageMaker, Lambda, S3).
  • Knowledge of data governance and security best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for using machine learning to improve healthcare outcomes.
  • Familiarity with graph databases, medical terminology, and healthcare data.
  • Experience with healthcare common data models and data exchange protocols such as OMOP CDM, FHIR, and others.
  • Knowledge of advanced topics such as natural language processing, reinforcement learning, or federated learning.
