The University of Toronto Scarborough has been a leader in co-operative education and work integrated learning (WIL), for 50 years. Co-op and WIL give students an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom, and to expand their knowledge through related work experience. The Department of Arts and Science Co-op is responsible for preparing over 3000 undergraduate students from 58 academic areas to compete for paid co-op work term opportunities. The department is also responsible for engaging industry partners who provide these work terms. A coordinated effort among the stakeholders of student, employer, and university co-op programming contribute to the development of well qualified graduates who are prepared to assume a productive role in society. Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Partnerships & External Relations, the Team Lead – External Relations and Industry Partnerships is a key role responsible for managing a team of External Relations and Business Development professionals. The Team Lead provides direction, coaching, and operational oversight to ensure the team effectively plans and manages their territories across industries such as but not limited to, Technology, Life Sciences, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Education and develops high-quality co-op opportunities for students across all 58 academic programs, and fosters strong, lasting relationships with industry partners.

In consultation with the Assistant Director, the Team Lead will design and operationalize the strategic plan for territory development, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and labor market trends. They will oversee the execution of collective territory plans, track performance against Objective and Key Results (OKRs), and proactively identify opportunities for growth and improvement. Using a data-informed approach, the Team Lead will assess team progress toward new business development and account retention goals, and adjust strategies to ensure targets are met or exceeded.

In addition to operational oversight, the Team Lead will play a central role in upholding team accountability and consistency by ensuring adherence to internal processes, workflows, and quality standards. They will lead continuous process improvement efforts to increase team efficiency and ensure a high standard of employer and student service delivery.

Within the unit, there are two Team Lead roles and the expectation is that they will work closely to achieve alignment and success across the teams.

The Team Lead will also maintain a small employer territory of their own to stay connected with industry trends, student needs, and frontline challenges. This hands-on engagement will also support the identification of emerging opportunities and partnerships that can benefit the broader co-op program. Furthermore, the Team Lead will cultivate strategic relationships with internal stakeholders and external organizations to enhance co-op employer engagement and expand hiring pipelines.

This role requires a strong blend of leadership, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to inspire and support a results-driven, collaborative team environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing workflow for a group
  • Planning and overseeing the implementation of new and/or revised business processes
  • Analyzing data to determine trends and recommend target markets
  • Researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships
  • Tracking the status of business development initiatives, activities and outcomes
  • Developing and implementing targeted outreach initiatives
  • Identifying, fostering and maintaining relationships with potential and existing employers

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in business administration, human resources, or education, or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum five years of experience in relationship management with external partners, new business development and account management
  • Experience supervising staff and leading staff, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Experience in market research and analysis, identification of target markets as well as direct sales and relationship development
  • Track record of success in a target driven environment generating new business and building client relationships in existing and new market sectors
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
  • Strong understanding of lead management, sales business processes and account management and how they strategically connect to marketing communications plans
  • Proven data-driven approach to measuring end-to-end business process including individual tactics and initiatives, new job development, retention and target outcomes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required in addition to the ability to make strong and confident presentations to a range of audiences
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with potential and existing employers, partners, alumni, and professional bodies
  • Proven ability to foster an engaging team atmosphere and motivate both individual and collective accountability to team targets and plans
  • Ability to work independently and within a team with strong organizational skills and a focused attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize work and multi-task
  • Good judgement, tact and discretion and able to resolve issues, problems and competing goals
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to effectively balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Highly motivated in a target based work environment
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Strong understanding of labour market trends

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience in marketing, developing marketing strategies, and promotional materials
  • Knowledge of the career services industry and experience within a Co-operative Education or Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) environment
  • Experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software such as Salesforce.com
