About the role

At Torngat Metals, we are developing the Strange Lake project to meet the urgent global demand for responsibly sourced rare earths that are essential to the energy transition. We are currently seeking talented individuals who are eager to contribute to our highly strategic project and play a role in shaping a resilient and responsible rare earth industry in Canada.

Torngat Metals is seeking an experienced Process Engineer to join its team, based in Montreal, with regular travel to the site. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role supports the Owner’s engineering interests and deliverables, within an EPCM or Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) framework.

The Process Engineer is the Owner’s technical contributor for process engineering on the Beneficiation Plant and Refinery, covering pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, solvent extraction, and associated infrastructure systems. This position requires strong process engineering depth in rare earth or base metal processing, hands-on experience with PFD and P&ID development, and the ability to collaborate effectively with IPD delivery partners, discipline leads, and the broader Owner’s team to ensure design solutions meet technical, operational, and safety requirements.

What You’ll Do

Develop, review, and maintain process engineering deliverables for the Refinery scope, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), heat and mass balances, process descriptions, equipment lists, and process datasheets. Participate in and support the development and review of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for hydrometallurgical, solvent extraction, precipitation, and associated utility systems. Size and specify major process equipment, including leaching reactors, mixer-settlers, thickeners, filter presses, pumps, heat exchangers, and associated tankage; prepare or review equipment specifications and datasheets. Conduct process simulations and modeling using relevant tools (e.g., HSC Chemistry, Aspen, or equivalent) to validate design assumptions, evaluate process performance, and support optimization studies. Prepare and maintain the process design basis documents and ensure design solutions remain aligned with the Owner’s functional, operational, and safety requirements throughout detailed design. Participate in HAZOP, operability reviews, and other process safety studies; track and follow up on action items within the Refinery process scope. Review and provide technical comments on process engineering deliverables produced by IPD delivery partners, ensuring alignment with the Owner’s design basis and applicable codes and standards. Provide technical input into procurement packages within the Refinery scope, including process equipment specifications, technical requisitions, and evaluation criteria for major process systems. Support technical bid evaluations and clarification processes for process equipment packages, reviewing vendor proposals for technical compliance. Review vendor drawings and documentation submissions for process equipment, including certified drawings, performance curves, and commissioning documentation, ensuring technical accuracy and timely turnaround. Support field engineering activities during construction, including review of site queries, field change requests, and non-conformance reports with process engineering implications. Contribute to commissioning planning and start-up support for Refinery process systems, including preparation of commissioning procedures, pre-commissioning checklists, and operating parameter envelopes. Ensure process design solutions incorporate applicable environmental controls, including water management, emissions control, effluent treatment, and tailings chemistry considerations. Support project stage-gate reviews and capital estimate updates by providing process engineering input and scope status for the Refinery.

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Metallurgical, or Process Engineering; Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation required or eligibility to register. Bilingualism (English and French) is a requirement. 5–10+ years of process engineering experience on mining, mineral processing, or metallurgical capital projects, with demonstrated depth in hydrometallurgical or solvent extraction process design. Hands-on experience developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, heat and mass balances, equipment specifications, and process datasheets in a detailed design environment. Proficiency with process simulation and modeling tools relevant to rare earth or base metal processing (e.g., HSC Chemistry, Aspen Plus/HYSYS, or equivalent). Familiarity with HAZOP and process safety review methodologies; experience as a participant or study node leader is an asset. Experience working within an owner’s team, EPCM, or IPD project environment with responsibility for reviewing and coordinating engineering deliverables produced by consultants or contractors. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards for process plant design (e.g., CSA, ASME, and relevant provincial regulatory requirements). Familiarity with Canadian environmental assessment processes and permitting requirements as they apply to process facilities is an asset. Experience with remote or northern project environments is a strong asset. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external delivery partners.
