About the role

Reporting to the Childcare Supervisor, the YW Kids Childcare Cook is responsible for preparing and serving attractive, age appropriate, and nutritionally balanced meals and snacks for children across eight childcare rooms. The role ensures the safe handling, storage, and preparation of food in accordance with Alberta Health Services standards, the Alberta Childcare Licensing Act, and the centre’s established menu and budgeting guidelines. The Childcare Cook supports the smooth operation of the kitchen, maintains a clean and organized workspace, monitors inventory, and collaborates effectively with childcare staff to meet diverse dietary needs, including allergies, restrictions, and infant/toddler feeding requirements.

This is a full‑time, on‑site position working Monday–Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Prepare and cook meals and snacks daily following the approved 4‑week menu for up to 156 children across 8 rooms
  • Ensure meals are attractive, nutritionally balanced, and portioned appropriately for infants, toddlers and preschool children
  • Prepare specialized meals such as purees or modified textures for infants and children with dietary needs
  • Adhere strictly to all posted allergies, dietary restrictions, and health related accommodations
  • Accept and store deliveries safely, ensuring food is rotated and expiry dates are monitored
  • Maintain strict cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchen surfaces, tools and transport equipment daily
  • Maintain organized, secure, and Alberta Health Services‑compliant storage areas for dry goods, refrigerated items, and frozen products
  • Track inventory, monitor supply levels, and document quantities to ensure adequate stock for menu cycles
  • Coordinate delivery schedules, verify order accuracy, and ensure products are stored immediately to maintain freshness
  • Report equipment concerns, hazards, or required repairs to the Supervisor or Facilities to ensure safe and continuous kitchen operation
  • Follow all Alberta Health Services food handling, storage, and sanitation regulations; maintain a kitchen that meets inspection standards
  • Work cooperatively with educators and co‑cooks, sharing kitchen space respectfully and efficiently
  • Communicate clearly with each childcare room regarding meal delivery times, storage instructions, allergies, and serving directions

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Food Safety Certification (AHS‑approved)
  • Certification in Alberta Family Wellness Initiatives Core Brain Story and First Aid CPR Level C

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Additional training in child nutrition or large‑scale food preparation is an asset
  • Experience preparing food for large groups, ideally in a childcare or institutional setting
  • Knowledge of large‑scale food preparation, portioning, and safe storage practices
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to changing needs in a fast‑moving environment
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills
