Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the District Administrator/Designate, the Education Assistant-Individual(s) participates as a member of a team and assists in the ongoing planning and implementing of adaptations and strategies as outlined in the student Individualized Education Plan (IEP), primarily within the classroom or learning support room, under the direction of the classroom teacher/ Learning Support Teacher (LST). These positions may require the maintenance of a constant state of vigilance in order to ensure the personal safety of student(s) and/ or staff. Certain positions may also be required to provide personal assistance and care and/ or position, wheelchair transfer and implement behaviour safety plans. The requirements will vary depending on the individual student(s) assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Grade 12 Graduation
  • Post-secondary training such as Special Education Assistant certificate or related courses
  • Recent experience & training supporting ABA program
  • Individual postings may require specialized courses or skills
  • Proven success in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with parents, teachers and students with exceptional needs
  • Ability to operate various types of special equipment
  • Individual postings may require the ability to facilitate the movement and positioning of students Valid B.C. Driver's license
  • Flexibility to undertake a variety of assignments
  • Good organizational, interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
  • Ability and dedication in working with students with diverse physical, social and cognitive needs
  • Some knowledge of standard office equipment including personal computers for instructional use

OR an equivalent combination of training and experience

Site Specific Considerations**:**

The successful applicants will have training and experience working with a wide variety of children with special needs including those with learning disabilities, multiple handicapping conditions, challenging behaviours and autism. Personal care may be required. May be required to support community services (eg swimming, bowling, etc). May be required to drive.
