Our client is a prestigious Business and Family Office firm with nearly 100 years of experience advising at the intersection of family and business. With a 600-person multidisciplinary team across Canada and the U.S., they provide integrated strategic advisory services to Canada's most successful entrepreneurs, private clients, business owners, and business families. Their holistic approach spans tax, audit, restructuring, risk management, wealth management, and family office services, helping clients achieve sustainable success and shape their legacy across generations.

Principal Tasks and Responsibilities Include:

Client Engagement & Advisory:

  • Lead complex tax planning and compliance engagements for Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs), partnerships, trusts, and high-net-worth individuals
  • Advise clients on reorganizations, succession planning, tax filing requirements, and tax-efficient structuring
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to family enterprises and private businesses on strategic tax matters

Technical Expertise:

  • Interpret and advise on Canadian federal and provincial income tax legislation, with cross-border coordination on U.S. tax matters
  • Review tax memos, legal documents, and opinions related to significant transactions, proposed reorganizations, and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) audit responses
  • Review and sign off on complex tax returns and elections, including T1, T2, T3, T5013, T1134, T1135 filings, and T2054, T2057, T2058, T2059, T2184, T2027 elections
  • Oversee comprehensive tax reviews of client structures (tax returns, corporate minute books, trust deeds, wills, powers of attorney) and develop strategies to optimize tax structures
  • Lead teams in computing safe income, exempt surplus, and Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption (LCGE) calculations, and develop strategies for optimal use
  • Apply tax strategies related to tax integration of corporate and partnership structures with shareholder structures (individuals and trusts)
  • Advise on cross-border tax matters relating to various tax treaties

Leadership & Team Development:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Family Office Services, Wealth Management, Transfer Pricing, U.S. Tax, Commodity Taxes, Assurance, and Business Valuation
  • Supervise and mentor Managers and Senior Associates within the tax group
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations

Practice Development:

  • Embrace AI and innovative technologies to increase efficiency and adopt new ways of working
  • Contribute to the development of internal processes and engagement management systems
  • Support business development initiatives and represent the firm in client meetings and industry events
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Qualifications and Pre-requisites:

Required:

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in Canadian tax with a strong focus on private enterprises (Big Four or reputable mid-sized firms)
  • CPA designation
  • Depth of experience in preparing tax calculations and tax returns for private clients
  • Strong Microsoft Excel, Taxprep, and Taxnet Pro tax research skills
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and adaptability to various clients and engagements
  • Proven track record in managing complex tax engagements and leading teams
  • Strong technical knowledge in Canadian tax compliance and planning for CCPCs, trusts, partnerships, and high-net-worth individuals
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and client relationship skills
  • Ability to thrive in a high-performance, collaborative environment

Preferred:

  • LL.B. (law degree) and/or MTax (Master of Taxation) designation
  • Experience with M&A/transactional tax, reorganizations, and succession planning
  • Exposure to international tax and cross-border matters
  • Generalist mindset with exposure to a variety of private client mandates

Additional Information and Perks:

Compensation:

  • Competitive base salary: $128,000-$200,000 CAD (commensurate with experience)
  • Performance bonus: 7.5%-15% based on firm, business unit, and individual performance
  • Retirement plan with employer matching (2% employee contribution + 2% employer match)
