About the role

About HazTrack

HazTrack is bringing IoT sensor technology and real-time data analytics to a massive, overlooked industrial market: used cooking oil (UCO) collection. The UCO industry is a foundational part of the circular economy—turning restaurant waste into renewable biofuels—but it struggles with inefficient routing, costly emergency pickups, and hundreds of millions of dollars in widespread UCO theft.

We solve this.

HazTrack builds rugged wireless tank-level sensors and a powerful software platform that gives our customers real-time visibility into their assets. We help collectors optimize their routes, reduce operational costs, prevent theft, and operate with true data-driven insight. We are a fast-growing, venture-backed startup based in Calgary, scaling across North America and becoming the operating system for UCO collectors everywhere.

The role

This is a hands-on ownership role over the firmware that runs on every HazTrack sensor in the field. You'll take ownership of that firmware, keep it running reliably across deployed devices, and build the next generation of capabilities as we integrate new hardware and push the product roadmap forward. You'll have real support from the engineering team, but you're accountable for the firmware and its outcomes.

What you'll own

Firmware development and maintenance. Maintain and extend our production firmware, keeping day-to-day reliability high in the field while shipping new features and capabilities that align with the product roadmap. Hardware integration. Bring up and integrate new hardware revisions and components into the firmware as our device evolves, working directly with the hardware team to validate against schematics and datasheets. Connectivity. Own the LTE-M cellular stack on our device, and debug and resolve network and connectivity issues surfaced from devices in the field. Test plans and validation. Design and run test plans for new features and hardware integrations, from bench-level testing through field validation and regression testing, so issues get caught before they ship. Roadmap alignment. Work directly with the CTO and the engineering team to translate the product roadmap into firmware capabilities and flag hardware/firmware trade-offs early.

Who you are

Required You have hands-on experience with firmware development in C, ideally in bare-metal environments on STM32 or similar microcontrollers. You have experience with LTE-M or similar cellular IoT connectivity, including AT command sets, network registration, and power-saving modes You're comfortable debugging at the hardware/firmware boundary: JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and reading schematics and datasheets You have experience writing and running test plans for embedded systems, from bench-level testing through field validation You understand power management and can write firmware that respects the constraints of a battery-powered device balancing sensing, compute, and connectivity You take ownership of a firmware codebase end-to-end: version control, release process, and debugging issues reported from devices already in the field You can be on-site in Calgary.

Strong assets

Experience with signal processing for radar, lidar, or other time-of-flight/ranging sensors. Experience writing or maintaining bootloaders and over-the-air (OTA) firmware update systems. Experience integrating accelerometers or other inertial/motion sensors.

We care more about what you've shipped and kept running than about pedigree or years-in-seat. If you've owned firmware for a device that lives in the real world, we want to talk.

What we offer

A high-ownership role owning our firmware end-to-end, with real support from the hardware team, a direct reporting line to the CTO, and real influence over how our devices evolve. A recently funded, fast-growing company with strong customers and a clear path into a much larger market. Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience, plus equity and benefits.
