Are you digitally savvy, creative, and detail-oriented? Do you want to work for an organization that believes in people’s potential?

At CFIB, your work supports small businesses in your community and across the country. You will have a hand in shaping the economy and future of the country. You will be independent through flexibility and accountability, so you can live and work at your best. You will join an organization that is collaborative and supportive, where more than 90% of employees agree it’s a great place to work. You will work closely with colleagues both locally and across the country – building upon synergies and learning from one another. You make a difference when you work at CFIB.

We are currently seeking a Data Analyst Intern for a 12-week internship in Toronto, with a hybrid or fully remote work arrangement.

Reporting to the Director, Development & Infrastructure, will assist the Technology & Analytics team with building reports, organizing data, and exploring data models; gaining practical experience with industry-standard platforms while supporting research that directly informs advocacy for Canadian small businesses.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and update reports and dashboards in Power BI, learning how to connect data sources, apply basic filters, and present findings clearly.
  • Write and run SQL queries to extract, clean, and summarize data from organizational databases under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Assist with data cleaning and preparation tasks using Python or Excel, documenting steps so work can be reproduced and audited.
  • Contribute to a summer project — which may include a data dashboard, an analysis summary, or a short proof-of-concept — and present findings to the team at the end of the term.
  • Translate data findings into clear, plain-language narratives for non-technical audiences, including written summaries and short presentations.
  • Participate in team meetings, ask questions, and take initiative on assigned tasks with growing independence over the course of the placement.

What makes a successful Data Analyst Intern?

  • Education in a post-secondary program in computer science, data science, statistics, information systems, or a related field
  • Basic familiarity with at least one data tool such as SQL, Python, or Excel, and an interest in continuing to develop technical skills.
  • Genuine curiosity about data, with a desire to explore datasets and understand the insights behind the numbers.
  • Strong attention to detail and the habit of double checking work to ensure accuracy.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain findings in plain language to a non technical audience.
  • Comfort working independently in a remote environment while staying engaged through regular check ins and collaboration.
  • Exposure through coursework or self study to dimensional modeling concepts such as fact and dimension tables, star schemas, or snowflake schemas.
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or another business intelligence tool, even if limited to academic or personal projects.
  • An interest in data storytelling and in turning data into clear, meaningful insights that support decision making.
  • Some familiarity with Git or basic version control concepts.

Notes: Currently enrolled students and recent graduates of relevant post-secondary education are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those candidates that are able to complete the internship without interruptions.

This application process requires a brief note (no more than one page) describing a time you used data to answer a question — in class, at work, or on a personal project. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage you to apply early.
