Scope

The City of Surrey is seeking a qualified Theatre Technician for the Surrey Civic Theatres (SCT). This is a technical position that provides expertise and oversite to ensure safe and efficient operation of technical systems within the theatre and festival environment. The Theatre Technician is responsible for implementing all necessary details to ensure the various production elements related to performances and activities in the Surrey Civic Theatres¿ venues and City of Surrey festivals are executed in a safe and professional manner. Civic Theatres are comprised of the following performance spaces:

The Surrey Arts Centre's 405-seat Main Stage is a traditional proscenium stage and fly gallery located at Surrey Arts Centre.

The 129-seat Studio Theatre, a black box theatre located at Surrey Arts Centre.

Centre Stage in the Council Chambers at Surrey's City Hall is a 200-seat performance venue.

Other Civic venues such as Clayton Community Centre, and outdoor events in Surrey Parks.

The Theatre Technician position offers the opportunity to join a friendly and supportive technical theatre team who are passionate about live events and performing arts. This team actively seeks to create opportunities for creativity, learning, and personal growth in serving the community. This position offers the opportunity to have a voice in the technical operations at the SCT and provides a supportive and challenging environment for successful candidates to explore and expand their related areas of interest.

Responsibilities

As the Theatre Technician you will:
Act as a technical crew leader, taking a key role in the operation of events, as well as operating technical elements for more advanced events.

Have a working knowledge of theatrical lighting systems, live event audio systems, counterweight fly systems, projections and video systems, maintenance of theatre equipment, and basic set construction, as well as be able to act as a specialist in either theatrical lighting or theatrical sound systems.

Oversee and support production staff, rental clients, contractors and others engaged in the operation, maintenance, repair and usage of the technical systems.

Ensure maintenance, cleaning and inspections are carried out under the direction of the Technical Director.

Work with artists and other technical staff to discern and facilitate technical requirements for shows under the supervision of the Technical Director.

Provide training and guidance to Auxiliary Theatre Technicians working at SCT.

Qualifications

Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution, supplemented by a minimum of 2 years directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Other important skills for this position include strong attention to detail, high functioning time management skills, ability to effectively organize and disseminate information, ability to work safely and effectively with staff and community members and build relationships with new and existing SCT clients. Effective and tactful communication skills are a must for this position as well as demonstrated initiative, a positive attitude, and strong customer relations. Proficiency with basic computer programs i.e. Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) is required. The successful candidate will also have:

Valid BC Driver's License with safe driving history.

Emergency First Aid Certificate with CPR.

Other certifications that would be an asset are:
Live Performance Electrical Certificate (LPEC), or other electrical certification.

Fall Arrest

Arial And Scissor Lift Certification.

Other considerations:
Hours and days of work will vary and will include weekends and evenings.

Flexibility in scheduling will be required.

Conditions of Employment

This position requires completion of a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
