About the role

PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Director of Technology will influence the overall direction of Compassion Canada’s technology and AI portfolio, advancing digital maturity, stewarding ethical and secure AI adoption, and helping drive the organization forward in its mission to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name.

This role leads Compassion Canada’s Information Technology and Digital Design and Development teams to ensure our CRM, martech, infrastructure and emerging AI capabilities support our mission to provide thrilling, neighbour centric experiences. The Director of Technology will guide both architectural and integrative aspects. This includes driving efficiency in internal processes, adopting responsible AI tools that enhance mission impact, and ensuring systems, data, and AI usage align with Compassion’s Christ centred, child focused, and church driven values. Tasked with maintaining a critical and strategic lens on how technology and AI can strengthen Compassion Canada’s ministry, the Director will collaborate across the organization to explore, test, and scale innovative approaches.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the information technology department and provide strategic direction for the managers of Information Technology (IT) and Digital Design and Development (D3).
  • Lead CRM-related vendor relationships, licensing, renewals, and technical roadmaps.
  • Oversee the strategic direction, optimization, and ongoing management of Compassion Canada’s CRM platforms, ensuring they effectively support supporter relationship management, fundraising, marketing, and operational workflows.
  • Ensure CRM systems are fully integrated within the martech stack, enabling a cohesive, data-informed, Neighbour-Centric experience across all supporter-facing channels.
  • Evaluate CRM performance and usage across teams, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, automation, personalization, and insight generation.
  • Evaluate emerging CRM capabilities, including AIdriven personalization, predictive modeling, and automation to strengthen supporter engagement, operational efficiency, and datadriven decision-making.
  • Oversee the administration, configuration, and enhancement of Compassion Canada’s CRM systems, ensuring they are secure, reliable, scalable, and well-supported. Ensure system configuration, data architecture, and workflows align with organizational needs and supporter life‑cycle strategies.
  • Ensure data quality, governance, and stewardship practices are in place, including data hygiene, deduplication, permissions management, and compliance with privacy regulations.
  • Spearhead a development roadmap and maintenance of a secure, accessible technology stack for the organization that facilitates integrations throughout the martech stack supporting our Neighbour Centric approach to marketing and relationship building.
  • Ensure the organization has the right mix of internal and external resources, including consultants and partners, to support ongoing projects while fostering innovation and agility.
  • Monitor the technology budget, evaluating the cost-effectiveness of technology service providers and applications.
  • Oversee all IT-related procurement and budget utilization, collaborating with Finance and the Chief Marketing & Digital Officer to develop budgets.
  • Implement and enforce standard Compassion IT policies and procedures including vigilance in protecting Compassion Canada's technology and data, monitoring for potential security threats and breaches.
  • Ensure network security at the organizational level and the safeguarding of Compassion Canada's assets, including hardware and software, through responsible maintenance and management.
  • Establish and enforce risk management standards and controls to identify and mitigate potential risks effectively.
  • Investigate and inform the organization about competitive trends, threats, and opportunities relevant to the area of responsibility.
  • Foster active team collaboration with all neighbour-facing teams (church, volunteer, mass/direct to consumer, major donor, etc.) and internal support teams (President's Office, Business Services, etc.).
  • With the Executive Leadership Team’s direction, set and steward Compassion Canada's AI vision and governance, ensuring all AI adoption aligns with Christ centred values, ethical standards, privacy requirements, and organizational mission impact.
  • Drive AI powered innovation and digital transformation, identifying, testing, and scaling tools (e.g., generative AI, personalization, predictive analytics, intelligent automation) that enhance supporter engagement, operational efficiency, and ministry effectiveness.
  • Oversee AI related data, security, and compliance, monitoring risks, safeguarding supporter and child data, ensuring adherence to cybersecurity and privacy standards, and evaluating the stewardship and cost effectiveness of AI solutions.
  • Build AI literacy and change readiness across teams, equipping staff with guidelines and training, promoting a culture of curiosity and discernment, and collaborating with Global Partners to harmonize safe, ministry aligned AI practices.
  • Foster growth and learning within the team by ensuring Compassion Canada stays informed and actively tests emerging technologies that support its mission.
  • Collaborate with organizational stakeholders to create and execute a technology roadmap that optimizes customer experience, minimizes risk, boosts revenue and competitiveness, reduces costs, improves strategic execution and; generates actionable insights from and organizational data.
  • Develop and spearhead Compassion Canada's digital transformation plan in cooperation with organizational stakeholders, to enhance overall performance and digital maturity.
  • Partner with internal teams to design CRM-enabled journeys, segmentation models, and automated processes that enhance engagement and ministry impact.
  • Collaborate with project teams to oversee and implement internal systems.
  • Assist the Chief Marketing & Digital Officer in developing strategic plans for Compassion Canada's Marketing & Digital Growth multi-year objectives.
  • Advise the Chief Marketing & Digital Officer on relevant local and global partner-IT related matter.
  • Collaborate closely with Global Partners and organizational leadership to to plan and execute additions, deletions, and significant modifications to the supporting infrastructure company-wide.
  • Help teams navigate the challenges of being digitally driven while upholding Compassion Canada's commitment to being a relational organization, both internally and externally.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Possess expertise in digital and technology disciplines, along with a deep understanding of modern approaches and methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of CRM strategy, system design & customization, and lifecycle management, including data governance, segmentation, workflow automation, and cross channel integration.
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining an AI governance framework, including policy standards, risk management structures, and human‑in‑the‑loop safeguards.
  • Ability to evaluate, test, and select AI tools, translating emerging trends into practical, mission enhancing applications across programs, marketing, supporter relations, fundraising, operations, and global partner collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance long-term technology roadmaps with the real-time demands of an agile and innovative organization.
  • Self-motivated learner, consistently enhancing skills and continuously learning to stay current and aware of emerging trends and data related to the area of responsibility.
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated competence in collaborating with cross-functional teams on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual presentation skills, capable of engaging with various levels within the organization and multiple external audiences.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • The role requires a post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Technology Management, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years professional experience in information technology with at least five (5) years in a leadership role.
  • Experience leading and developing cross-functional technology teams, providing mentorship, coaching, and performance management is required.
  • Proven experience managing large-scale technology projects, including software system implementations, infrastructure upgrades, and digital transformation initiatives, is required.
  • Proficiency with enterprise software systems, cloud-based applications, IT service management, and digital platforms is required.
  • Proven ability to foster innovation, implement agile methodologies, and balance strategic technology planning with day-to-day operational needs is required.
  • Experience managing enterprise CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, Blackbaud, or equivalent), including implementation, optimization, integrations, and user adoption.
  • Practical experience applying AI‑enabled solutions or leading AI‑related initiatives, along with relevant training or exposure to AI strategy, governance, or data‑driven technologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in IT architecture, integrations, cybersecurity, risk management, and technology infrastructure planning is essential.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is preferred, including managing donor information systems, reporting, and optimizing technology to achieve mission impact with limited resources.
  • Continuous learning, professional development, or certifications in technology management, cybersecurity, project management, or related areas are considered an asset.
