Hours Seasonal Part Time, Up to 9 months, Normal Working Hours up to 24 hours per week, includes days, evenings and weekends.

Other Travel throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes in accordance with job requirements; work locations may vary

Job Description

  • Operate and maintain front-end loader, roll off truck, waste compactor and any other landfill equipment
  • Segregate incoming materials moving to appropriate location/bin, and/or manually stack or package items (i.e. tires, electronics, scrap metal, hazardous waste,) for shipment
  • Ensure waste is disposed in proper location at the tip face and in accordance with design plans
  • Ensure proper compaction of waste in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Apply cover material to exposed refuse in designated areas in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Load recycling into bins or trailers using high lift loader
  • Prepare incident reports and other documentation
  • Pick up, delivery and emptying of roll off bins to, from and at various City landfill sites
  • Adhere to legislative requirements and standard operating procedures regulating all landfill operations including maintenance of required records
  • Monitor and report change or substantive fluctuation in various detection systems located at landfill(s) (i.e. methane detection, leachate controls, etc.)
  • Operate a commercial scale, enter load information in a computer system, weigh customer load, calculate fees, collect payments using both cash and debit transactions, prepare charge and cash tickets, and issue receipts
  • Maintain a working float, prepare deposit slips and reconciliation forms as well as make bank deposits
  • Verify residence of customers and check list of denied landfill users and deny use of landfill if person is on list
  • Input ticket information into computer database, perform computer daily backup and monthly download
  • Direct landfill users to appropriate area, inspect loads to ensure only acceptable refuse enters the site and notify appropriate personnel of loads containing questionable waste material
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of grounds including but not limited to cutting grass, snow removal, painting, sweeping, and litter collection, at any of the active and inactive City landfill sites
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Skills/Education Required

  • Secondary School diploma
  • Minimum 2 years experience operating a front-end loader, landfill compactor, and ability to do routine daily maintenance, including driving and operating a tandem or triaxle roll off truck
  • Experience in handling cash and receipts
  • WHMIS, First Aid and CPR preferred
  • Effective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills to deal with members of the public, council and all levels of staff
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative consistently with commitment to quality improvement, sharing process improvement initiatives with management
  • Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to work independently or as an effective member of a team
  • Must have legible and accurate writing ability
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, the internet, and any other related software
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario class “D” driver’s licence, with “Z” endorsement and acceptable driving record
