About the role

Director & Actuary

Location: Hybrid - Kingston or Toronto

Empire Life is looking to hire a Director & Actuary to join our Group Finance & Actuarial team!

The Director & Actuary is accountable for achieving business financial and risk management goals by recommending and implementing actuarial solutions through leadership of a functional area with a focus on pricing, valuation, risk management, capital management and/or financial planning. The Director & Actuary develops employees and manages performance to foster a high performing team environment. The incumbent is guided by defined goals and objectives, and works under the broad supervision of the Vice President of the area.

What you’ll be working on

  • Accountable for the design, development, implementation and review of actuarial programs, projects, processes and models to support the functional area and achieve business goals and objectives
  • Accountable for research, analysis and recommendations on actuarial issues, methods and solutions to support business strategy development
  • Identify employee training and development needs; participate in the hiring and employment processes for team members; set employee goals and objectives; manage employee performance; and develop a high performing team to achieve departmental goals and to meet future talent needs
  • Effectively communicate, collaborate, influence and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders at senior levels to lead the development and delivery of actuarial programs and meet business objectives
  • Continue professional development including business knowledge development to support career progression and role competency in sustaining the company’s pool of actuarial resources

What we’re looking for you to have

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience in the insurance/financial services industry
  • Completion of FSA/FCIA designation
  • Completion of a university degree with courses in mathematics, economics and/or business
  • Advanced mathematical and programming skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced research, analysis and decision-making skills
  • Ability to develop and negotiate innovative solutions
  • Outstanding organizational skills with ability to manage competing priorities
  • Proven ability to provide guidance and share knowledge effectively
  • Strong team building, coaching and performance management skills
  • Advanced working knowledge of spreadsheet, database and word processing software
  • Advanced working knowledge of actuarial applications (AXIS, Atlas, etc.)
