As an Engineer at Toronto Hydro, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing innovative solutions across various aspects of utility operations. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of critical infrastructure and systems. You'll work on projects aimed at optimizing energy distribution, improving grid resilience and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
Reporting to the Stations and Capacity Planning team, the incumbent provides a wide range of technical services for internal and external customers to ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility.
With a focus on station high-voltage equipment and capacity, you will drive outcomes via strategic planning activities to ensure alignment of investment priorities. You will assess technology options and manage multi-million-dollar investment portfolios to balance risks. You will also serve as the designated planner for multiple stations within Toronto Hydro’s territory, target strategic investments and coordinate stakeholders.
In alignment with corporate strategy and values, you will collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including Customer Care, Regulatory, Operations, as well as Hydro One Networks Inc. (HONI), the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), as well as numerous vendors and consultants.
The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.
This posting is to fill 1 position which is an existing vacancy. Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in alignment with the applicable collective agreement, to finalize the number of positions filled. Key Responsibilities
- Prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis and prepares plans for station and distribution system performance improvements. Participates in short and long-range strategic planning for maintenance activities.
- Leads strategic investment planning and portfolio reporting (IPPR) for designated investment portfolios.
- Serves as the technical knowledge repository and risk monitor for designated stations and investment portfolios. Manages risks via strategic prioritization of investments.
- Develops scopes and work packages in alignment with customer needs and investment plans for design and construction. Collaborates with execution teams and stakeholders to resolve issues.
- Conducts regular site visits and participate in site meetings to identify challenges and solutions for the successful implementation of investment program.
- Accountable for the timely, technically accurate and cost-effective application of engineering practices.
- Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis, and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution.
- Supports the preparation of material and/or technical specifications and standards; reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies.
- Reviews codes, standards, guidelines, long term energy policies, and conduct benchmarking studies
- Supports grid modernization, electrification, and utility of the future initiatives through innovation and adoption of new technologies
- Participates in implementing corporate goals and objectives.
- Represents Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees.
- May be called upon to act as a team or project leader.
Requirements
- Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering. Electrical engineering preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in power system engineering.
- Experience with substation engineering and project delivery preferred.
- Experience with protection and control (P&C) and system studies preferred.
- Experience with high voltage substation equipment specifications preferred.
- Experience with project management preferred.
- Valid Class “G” Drivers License.
- Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence. Can visualize opportunities and demonstrates drive to continuous learning and improvement.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in data management and analysis.
- Effective skills in project management, budgeting, and process improvements.
- Effective skills in business case development, research, and solutioning.
- Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change, willing to challenge the status quo.

This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
