##Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required. An undergraduate degree in Business or Science (preferably in Computer Science or Life Science) is highly preferred.
  • Access to reliable vehicle, hold a valid driver’s license and able to travel as required.
  • A certificate in Human Resource Management or Career Coaching would be an asset.
  • A breadth of scientific background would be an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two years of directly related experience (Co-op or work -integrated learning career counseling and management program, career development / training program, an adult education program) is required.
  • Experience in career advising and recruitment is required.
  • Business development experience and effective relations management experience is required.
  • Knowledge of co-operative education and/or work-integrated learning (WIL) is required.

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to work and communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy with a variety of internal and external stakeholders such as students, employers, faculty and alumni, are required.

  • Ability to incorporate a varied work schedule to attend evening and/or weekend events as required.
  • Comfortable working in a remote environment as required.
  • Well-developed public speaking, coaching and facilitation skills; along with previous experience developing and facilitating workshops are preferred.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

##Key responsibilities

  • Identify, develop and cultivate strategic employer relationships at the local, national and international levels, with the goal to develop quality co-op work term opportunities.
  • Prepare appropriate presentations for employers.
  • Establish and maintain linkages with relevant employer and industry professional associations and attending relevant events.
  • Expand the number and breadth of co-op work terms opportunities available to students.
  • Coordinate employer on-campus co-op events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with faculty and staff within the academic units offering co-op.
  • Actively market the programs to prospective students through a variety of contact points.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with UM Science Co-op alumni as well as UM Faculty of Science alumni.
  • Attend meetings and committees, as required, and represents the program in the absence of the Director.
  • Assist the Director with the recruitment, training, delegation of work, and supervision of the Program Assistants.
  • Coordinate intake process.
  • Provide individualized support to co-op students in the development of self- marketing and branding tools.
  • Facilitate mock interviews by developing interview questions relevant to the students’ searches and career paths, and provide constructive, developmental feedback.
  • Guide and support students in their search strategies through individual appointments, with follow-up as required, and actively promote and support students’ independent searches.
  • Support students, as required, in the development of appropriate learning objectives for their work terms and monitor progress at key touchpoints including, site visits and final evaluations.
  • Coordinate and conduct site visits with students and employers during the work terms to discuss learning objectives, skill development the work term.
  • Coordinate the placement process.
  • Develop workshops, promotional materials, program materials and related forms in support of the programs.
  • Ensure students submit co-op work term assignments by established deadlines and ensure employers submit completed evaluations.
  • Review and evaluate students’ assignments, as required, and follow -up with students and employers as needed.
  • Ensure employers and students submit final evaluations in accordance with the program requirements.
  • Responsible for submitting students’ final grades.
  • Provide guidance to students and employers to resolve issues related to on-the-job performance, inappropriate job responsibilities, interpersonal conflicts, or other workplace concerns.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date employer and student files.
  • Manage and maintain employer and student databases and accurately provide requested data and reports in a timely manner to the Director, Dean’s Office and departments.
  • Ensure website content is current, relevant and timely.
  • Act as liaison between students, employers and faculty.
  • Ensure Co-operative Education and Work Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) best practices and national standards are followed in the delivery of the programs.
  • Remain current with relevant employment legislation, CEWIL best practices, funding programs (including SWPP), and other government and industry initiatives related to work-integrated learning.
  • Maintain involvement with relevant work-integrated learning associations and industry/ professional associations.
  • Research and review current labor market information.
  • Participate in disciplinary meetings with the Director and appropriate Associate Dean, as required.
  • Assess ongoing student participation in accordance with the program’s terms and conditions.
  • Attend UM co-op meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Design, prepare and deliver Co-op orientation and information sessions.
  • Design, facilitate, and deliver mandatory career development workshop programming to prepare newly admitted Co-op students for their job search and positions.
  • Conduct surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of programming.
  • Ensure ongoing improvement in the design and delivery of employability skills programming to support successful Co-op work terms, career education programming, and the subsequent reflection of learning outcomes.
  • Facilitate partnerships with employers and other external bodies to develop collaborative programming that supports students’ career and professional development.
  • Advise students regarding the eligibility requirements pertaining to their participation in Co-op.
  • Work in conjunction with Dean’s Office Academic Advisors, Departmental Advisors, and Program Directors to advise students on the process to withdraw from academic courses and to register in the applicable co-op work term course once a work term has been secured.
  • Maintain relationships with Dean’s Office Academic Advisors, as well as appropriate Departmental Advisors and Department Heads.
  • Advise employers about Co-op program requirements, external wage subsidy programs, and the development of Co-op positions that adhere to all guidelines and requirements.
  • Inform employes and students of CEWIL recruiting ethics and advise that all stakeholders are required to adhere to these standards.
  • Inform employers that they must adhere to all applicable federal and /or provincial legislation related to co-op hiring.
  • Deliver pre-departure training to students completing international co-op work term and advise/support their applications for any required employment authorizations.
  • Inform international co-op students that a co-op work permit is required to complete co-op work terms in Canada, and direct students to appropriate on-campus resources for guidance on obtaining required co-op work permit authorizations.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
