Position Title:

Guide Dog Trainer

Reports To: Manager, Guide Dog Training

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

The Guide Dog Trainer (GDT) will prepare allocated dogs by assessing and training them to blindfold standard for pick up by Guide Dog Mobility Instructors. This position will also mentor Guide Dog Trainers, apprentice Guide Dog Trainers, dog care and welfare staff and others as required in dog handling skills and techniques. Finally, the Guide Dog Trainer will act as an ambassador for CNIB Guide dogs, promoting good public image and supporting the Association’s strategic direction while working in the community.

II. Essential Functions

  • Carry out preliminary assessment of dogs
  • Prepare selected dogs according to the pre-determined programme to ensure that dogs are supplied within desired time frame and quality
  • Identify temperamental and behavioural issues, and ensure the application of appropriate solutions
  • Highlight all health issues and promptly refer them to be reviewed
  • Highlight dogs that are ready for progression of training and recommend dogs that should be withdrawn
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation including Salesforce for dogs in Guide Dog Trainer's charge
  • Report and document all accidents and incidents relating to dogs and also with third parties, in line with current Health and Safety policies
  • Other activities relevant to the role that will enable CNIB Guide Dogs to get blind and partially sighted people out and about in the way they choose
  • Comply with CNIB Guide Dogs' terms and conditions, rules, policies, procedures, codes of conduct, quality standards, authorisation processes, risk management policies, etc. and relevant external regulations
  • Commit and actively participate in continuous professional development
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with all CNIB staff members and volunteers.
  • Committed to a continuous high level of standards and quality outputs.
  • Delivers in collaboration with colleagues upon the annual training objectives and core program activities as required in an identified timely manner.
  • Proven ability and experience to work within a team environment and contribute sound solutions to any operational matters within the Guide Dog training program.
  • This position works under the general direction of the CNIB Guide Dogs guidelines and standards but has the required latitude in making decisions on daily activities as it pertains to their role and responsibilities.
  • The Guide Dog Trainer operates with direct supervision from the Manager, Guide Dog Training Teams, and consults with this individual on issues that are more complex or that may require a higher level of approval.
  • The Guide Dog Trainer works in a team environment and in collaboration with other Guide Dog Trainers, and Apprentice Guide Dog Trainers, and the Manager, Guide Dog Training Teams to achieve annual objectives.
  • Enhances team efforts on a professional level and shares specialized knowledge, sources, experience, concepts, and skills when needed.
  • Provides advice to Apprentice Guide Dog Trainers, Dog Care and Welfare staff, volunteers and key external stakeholders as required.

III. Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Ability to undertake the physical demands of the role, including walking long distances, controlling and walking with a range of dog breeds, ages, and temperaments
  • Enthusiastic team player who can also work well independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office and Salesforce knowledge is an asset

Experience and Education

  • Completed a certification for Guide Dog Trainer Apprenticeship program within an organization accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English
  • Demonstrated aptitude for dog handling; Ability to practically apply theoretical knowledge
  • High school diploma
  • Current valid driving licence
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada

Work Environment

  • Flexible and willing to work in changing environments.
  • Involves working outdoors, in all weather elements, with strong active guide dogs.
  • Comfortable training guide dogs in the public eye, including indoor public spaces, public transit and a variety of outdoor environments.
