Existing Budget-Funded Continuing Full-Time

40.00 hours/week 12 hour shifts, rotating shiftwork

Salary Range: $26.96 - $33.63 per hour ($56,076.80 - $69,950.40 per annum)

Proposed Start Date: January 5, 2026

Responsibilities:

  • Work to establish and cultivate a positive presence within the university community and liaise with individuals, committees, groups and other off-campus associated agencies on crime prevention and security related issues.
  • Provide a continuous and visible deterrent on campus to ensure the safety and security of the people and property.
  • Conduct campus security patrols including grounds and multi-storied buildings, on foot, by bicycle and/or vehicle, noting irregularities and/or malfunctions and reporting unauthorized or suspicious activities.
  • Applies and interprets legislation and UM Security Services' policies and procedures in receiving and responding to complaints from members of the campus community and general public. Investigates and reports incidents and complaints to the Director or designated Supervisor and law enforcement or government agency as appropriate.
  • Attend and give evidence in court as required.

Responsible for the integrity of all physical security systems (including but not limited to: intrusion, personal safety, fire, mechanical, card access) and reporting in writing all malfunctions and activated alarms.

  • Directs and controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic; attends and assists in vehicle accidents; enforces University of Manitoba Traffic and Parking Regulations.

  • Attends events, alarms, accidents, emergencies, fire and ambulance calls on university property and renders assistance, including First Aid as required.

  • Services the needs of the campus community or general public by direct assistance to and/or referral to the appropriate agency as required.

  • Ensures patrol equipment, including patrol vehicles and bicycles, are in effective operating condition and advises supervisor of service requirements.

  • Each Security Guard will be assigned a specific area of responsibility to perform, either as a team member or for the Department as a whole.

  • Take advantage of opportunities for training and development, including in-house and external traiining, in job-related areas such as interpersonal relations, conflict resolution, self-defense, investigation techniques, first aid, CPR, community relations, crime prevention, security techniques, etc.

  • Take opportunities to develop instructional skills in crime prevention and other security topics in order to instruct Security Guards to conduct Campus workshops.

  • Work in the Station Duty office and respond to complaints, enquiries or referrals, also respond to emergency calls on the university network and 555 or Code blue and when necessary, call 911. Complete any necessary reports.

  • Monitor alcohol related events and if necessary, report possible violations. Enforcement may occur if other techniques are unsuccessful.

  • Report all hazards found on campus.

  • Transport university administration staff who are involved in the emergency contingency flow chart.

  • Work rotating shifts and overtime or longer shifts as required on a 24-hour basis.

  • Provide direction, guidance and training to more junior Security Guards.

  • Performs other duties similar in scope and complexity, as required.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

  • University Degree, College Diploma, or equivalent combination of training, education, and/or experience.

  • Eligible to qualify as a Peace Officer or Institutional Safety Officer status in the Province of Manitoba is required (must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada).

  • Experience with computer systems.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 12 months related security experience, and/or;

  • Experience/proficiency with various computer and electronic systems related to life safety, security and reporting (eg. Incident management software, handheld radios, etc).

SKILLS& ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work harmoniously within a team environment.

  • Ability to problem solve, think critically and multi-task in a dynamic environment.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to complete written reports within multiple electronic reporting systems to a high standard.

  • Ability to operate proficiently multiple electronic systems, including but not limited to radios, handheld devices, CCTV, emergency warning systems and/or other emergency related equipment.

  • High level of tact and diplomacy in dealing with the culturally diverse University community under a wide variety of circumstances.

  • Ability to independently demonstrate good judgement, initiative and professional discretion with matters pertaining to security, law and policy.

  • Highly motivated, self-starter, willing to build professional skills through training and experience.

  • Must have and maintain a valid Manitoba Security Guard License.

  • Eligible to qualify as a Peace Officer or Institutional Safety Officer status in the Province of Manitoba.

  • Have and maintain a Manitoba Driver's License with at least a Class 5F driver's license.

  • Have and maintain training in Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR.

  • Have and maintain a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector record.

  • Demonstrate proficiency, qualify and maintain a qualification in de-escalation, use of force and ddefensive techniques. This includes non-violent crisis intervention and use of a defensive baton.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Will be required to work regular day and night rotating 12-hour shifts (including weekdays, weekends and holidays).

  • Physically capable of performing the duties while carrying patrol equipment, (i.e. ability to bend, stoop, stretch, climb several flights of stairs and carry out patrols and emergency response on foot, bicycle or vehicle as required).

  • Physically capable of performing duties both inside and outside considering a variety of weather conditions and/or environments.

  • Demonstrate physical proficiency, qualify and maintain a qualification in use of force and defensive techniques. This includes the use of a defensive baton.
